The lights went down. The smoke blew out. The screams were deafening. And all you could see was the five of them standing shoulder to shoulder, illuminated only by the explosive click-flash of cameras.
There they were. Duran fucking Duran. Brilliant.
Kicking off their set with "Friends of Mine" from the debut, Simon le Bon, Nick Rhodes, Andy/John/Roger Taylors (still not related) slammed through a mix of hits and old school album cuts, sending the crowd into screaming hysterics and massive sing-alongs. The band was low on chat, packing hyper hits like "Planet Earth" and "Hungry Like the Wolf" near the front, cooling down midset with new songs "What Happens Tomorrow" and "Virus" before building back up with a storming "Wild Boys" and "Careless Memories."
"New Religion" returned to their live set after a long absence, and unlikely choice "Night Boat" managed to be just as penetrating and spooky live as on record.
Later-years Duran tunes were limited to "Come Undone," their cover of "White Lines," and comeback hit "Ordinary World," which revealed the difference between original guitarist Andy Taylor’s playing style and that of the departed Warren Cuccurullo. Taylor’s take on the riff was weak; making a great song merely good and providing the only real blemish on an otherwise excellent show.
Duran Duran have a 16-city tour planned next month in the U.S., followed in December by a supporting slot for Robbie Williams in Australia, where they haven't toured in 20 years. There are no further European gigs scheduled at this time.
