First off I just want to say how much I hate this venue. The staff are rude, the (hot, flickering) lights are kept on during the whole gig, and the walls are a hospital ward-type mix of sickly yellow and drab brown. On top of that Atom isn't even headlining, some hardcore band called Good Clean Fun are, hence the room is split straight down the middle; on one side, geeky Burning Airlines t-shirt wearing kids, on the other, a bunch of spiky blue-haired punks embarrassed by the unexpectedly bright lighting exposing their spectacularly dull Rancid jackets. The word 'awkward' springs to mind, and no amount of unfortunately accented yelling by the first support band can alleviate the tension. Atom, however, is in a league of his own.
The fact that tonight's line-up consists of, in the squinty-eyed one's own words, Atom and His CD Player, as oppose to His Package (a big flashy-light box with a CD player hidden inside it), has little impact on the crowd tonight. Sure we're denied the spectacle of an inanimate box with some LEDs on it, but the humour of seeing Atom jump offstage between every song to hit the skip button more than makes up for this.
Much in the same way an alien observing a pair of Italians immersed in a heated conversation might think that erratic hand-movements were the medium through which they communicated, with the speech perhaps just setting the mood, any unsuspecting member of tonight's audience could quite easily have mistaken Atom for a comedian, with his 'songs' acting as mere fillers. I mean let's face it, he doesn't exactly play any instruments (beside the occasional twang on his guitar), and his singing rarely consists of anything more than lazy daydreams (…I had a dream when I was in high school that I attended the Punk Rock Academy…) and spontaneous bouts of deranged laughing. The very idea that back in the States people actually mosh to this stuff boggles the mind. Nonetheless, to describe the blissful sequencer-heavy three minutes of Happy Birthday Ralph as anything but genius – REAL musical and lyrical genius – would be to kick Chino Moreno in the nuts and crown Hear'Say the kings of nu-metal.
So, musically he's cool. The Package / CD Player provides the weird drumbeats and odd spooky sound effect, he smiles a lot and sings in a semi-angelic semi-retarded voice, and every now and then we're treated to one or two chords from his guitar. Without the jokes, however, seeing Atom live would be like going to the cinema to watch a film you already own on VHS. There's no crowd interaction, it’s the same volume as at home, and visual stimulation (minus one Package) is zero. Thankfully any threat of Atom (real name Adam, by the way) abandoning his mid-song banter vanishes the moment he kicks into the story behind his (plagiarized) song Shopping Spree.
You'll have to catch him live if you want to know how that one ends though.

Atom and his Package - London Swan

Re: Atom and his Package - London Swan
"Atom isn't even headlining, some hardcore band called Good Clean Fun are, hence the room is split straight down the middle; on one side, geeky Burning Airlines t-shirt wearing kids, on the other, a bunch of spiky blue-haired punks embarrassed by the unexpectedly bright lighting exposing their spectacularly dull Rancid jackets."
that "some hardcore band" are infact good friends with Atom, hence the reason for them doing the whole tour together out of mutial respect. And as for a straight split down the middle in terms of crowd, i never noticed this. Yeah maybe there were at least a couple of people there to see Atom who thought they were above the rest of the "punk" goings on that night like yourself, but everyone else who I knew at that show were there to see all 4 bands that evening. sorry if that surprises you, but this is punk rock chap. did you even stay to watch good clean fun? as someone who went to that gig, i had more interest in seeing Atom but came away thinking that good clean fun were fantastic and stole the show. I normally don't enjoy straight ahead straight-edge hardcore, but good clean fun were a lot of fun. and as for your comment about rancid jackets and spikey blue hair, i didn't see any of that mate! stop playing along to a boring old stereotype.
Re: Atom and his Package - London Swan
I'd encourage any constructive criticism you have on my writing / ideas, but you're both arguing completely blindly. I didn't even raise half the issues you're demolishing:
and it's good that 2 completely different styles of band can play together
Did I say it wasn't good?
you're lucky these gigs get put on at all in london
I agree. Try reading my article through again and noticing the fact that, aside from a fully justified whine about the venue, it's almost completely complimentary.
that "some hardcore band" are infact good friends with Atom
So? I just said "some...band" because I don't know who they are, have never heard them, and didn't stick around to watch them.

Making a few assumptions aren't we? I normally *do* try to catch all the bands I can because I like checking out new talent. The reason I didn't then was because the venue was a dump, it was miles away from my house, and until the next day I didn't even KNOW a band was playing above Atom. If I hadda known I probably would have stuck around. And by the way I did watch the band that came on before Atom and I rather liked them.
and as for your comment about rancid jackets and spikey blue hair, i didn't see any of that mate! stop playing along to a boring old stereotype.
Sorry dude. I might not have had my little notepad on me, but I distinctly remember both of those things. Unless both those items were resting on your scalp / around your torso, I'm sure you would have seen them too.
Try to keep your complaints remotely relevant (i.e. provoked) in future. Also, if you must insult me, some justification would be nice. How the hell did you come to the conclusion that I think I'm "above" the rest of the punk bands just based on a (largely complimentary) 500word review I wrote?!?

Re: Atom and his Package - London Swan
good hope you are for the future of journalism then
" Making a few assumptions aren't we?"
possibly but looking at a few things you wrote in the review i'd say it was pretty justified.

i must be blind then, i do apologise.

yes, largely comlimentary of the one band you bothered to watch/write about. many comments like "some hardcore band" and "spiky blue-haired punks embarrassed by the unexpectedly bright lighting exposing their spectacularly dull Rancid jackets" do give a slight feeling of being above all this. that doesn't bother me, just don't come to the shows! two bands on independant labels come all the way from the states, do the tour totally DIY and you complain about the venue? and if you think that what i wrote was insulting then I despair!
Re: Atom and his Package - London Swan
If you really care that much I can give you some figures on how many concerts I go to, and you can work out the percentage of times I've stayed to watch every band on the bill.
And don't tell me not to come to the shows! Jesus who the hell do you think you are?!?

Re: Atom and his Package - London Swan
i'm speaking as someone who puts on shows, puts out records and is sick of people who come to shows and then moan moan moan about petty insignificant things. if you don't like these things, just simply don't come the shows. saves moaning about them later.
Re: Atom and his Package - London Swan
isnt that a little oppressive?
and i wouldnt say i was moaning in the review... i said like one thing was bad. it still got 4/5

Re: Atom and his Package - London Swan
you elitist diy cock.
Re: Atom and his Package - London Swan
fuck off and die you dumb fuck. without diy cocks you wouldn't have any shows to go to... where do you think these bands that sell out the bigger venues originate from? dumbass.
sorry about that first bit... a little harsh really wasn't it?
