The smell of pot hangs heavy in the air, people are milling around with bottles of water instead of pints of beer. What a scene. I spot a kid in a Linkin Park hoodie, young men in suits straight from work, Face_ wannabes and middle aged couples holding hands.
On stage is a black woman wearing a sparkly top, her voice is soulful, almost as strong as Whitney Houston; she is backed by a DJ and a keyboardist. This is Un-Cut. They mix drum 'n' bass with soulful singing, R ‘n' B and hip hop beats. This gets some of the crowd dancing but most people are interested in talking and rolling joints. Sometimes live Un-Cut go a bit Gabrielle, but we can forgive them for that because their drum 'n' bass/hip hop style is so much better.
Security is tight; they know people want to dance tonight and there is no way dancing is allowed upstairs, so those with seating tickets aren't getting down.
Bathed in strobing green lights, Lamb step on stage. The bass rolls through our bodies. I feel queasy but this soon passes; I love the way loud bass makes your insides shake. Last night they performed to a handful of people in a pub in Derby. This is obviously a London thing.
Dressed in what looks like a pink tutu, Louise has the most individual voice in today’s music industry. She walks up and down the stage; singing, screeching and howling like Kate Bush with hints of PJ Harvey; sometimes soothing, sometimes chilling; it sends a shiver down my spine. Andy on the other hand is loving every minute of it; he jumps up and down and whips the crowd up. He’s waited so long for this and wants to pass his excitement on to us.
With our eyes open we are mesmerised and with our eyes closed we soak up the beats, the mix of trip hop and drum 'n' bass and sway to the music. And when we finally open our eyes again, time has gone and the gig is over.
