Millionaire

Span and Siamese

Edit this event

Y'know those gigs that start off absolutely rammed, and see the audience gradually fizzle out throughout the evening, completely the wrong way round?? This is one of those gigs. The not-so-beautiful people are out in force tonight for a gig that features 3 of Europe's best bands strutting their stuff in the sweatbox that is the 100 Club, yet half of them left before the co-headliners even hit the stage.

The Swedish/English Siamese get things moving with a highly retro set - put simply, they sound like Blondie. Exactly like Blondie. There's not much else you can say. It sounds great, we're not complaining... just don't expect progression.

However. Imagine if, for one brief flickering moment in the early 90s, Chris Cornell had stopped mid-riff to consider his lot in life, and come to the conclusion that it was time to stop sorrowing and start partying. Blessed be, for one sunny day in a remote corner of Norway, it actually happened. Probably. In an alternative tale, 4 blokes got together and decided to start a band called Span. This is rock for sexy people. Frontman Jarle has more than a little of the Jagger in him, and he fronts a very fucking tight outfit. You've got the blistering kick-to-the-head guitar-wielding that marked Soundgarden out, but delivered with teasing panache, slowed right...the...fuck...down.. until buh-BAM, they slam back into rawk mode. The devil resides in these riffs. The band meanwhile will be stars. Depend on it.

Cut to 25 minutes later, and inexplicably, everyone seems to have fucked off. This is clearly wrong, for Belgium's Millionaire are due onstage any minute now. Spinning chaotic, aggressive, electroclash genius, Millionaire really should have a packed room watching them. This is every riff Queens Of The Stone Age haven't gotten round to writing yet [no small coincidence in their support slot with them then], spliced with the grooves that Soulwax dream about in their haziest dreams and darkest nightmares. This is pulsating rhythm, fucking itself from behind while the whole room [such as it is] watches. It's tight, cohesive and damn good. Give them a few months and they'll fill rooms three times this size.

Millionaire + Span + Siamese - London 100 Club

span sound absolutley nothing like soundgarden....dont know where you got that.

and millionaire are rubbish and also sound nothing like qotsa (they will now after they've spent soo much cash getting that support though)

Re: Millionaire + Span + Siamese - London 100 Club

Span sound like grunge with a big fat smile, sped up to sunfactor 105! Some say Span sound like Aerosmith.

Millionaire are ace. Shut up, bob..

Re: Millionaire + Span + Siamese - London 100 Club

well they remind me a LOT of soundgarden. and they reminded a few other people i spoke to of soundgarden as well. another DiSser in fact described them as "soundgarden without the crap bits!" or something to that effect.. it's certainly not a random description conjured out of thin air! ditto the qotsa/millionaire comparison - a couple of people agreed with me on that one. i didn't go to qotsa, didn't know until yesterday that millionaire had actually supported them.

all down to interpretation i guess..

Re: Millionaire + Span + Siamese - London 100 Club

never trust a DiSser, soundgarden my ass. you dont understand how wrong you are, were you about when soundgarden were making music?

and millionaire would never have been compared to qotsa if they hadn't supported, people just can't come up with original comparisons.

Re: Millionaire + Span + Siamese - London 100 Club

i'm sure you don't want me to dredge up the entire "'ere, they sound like qotsa,"... "that might be why they supported qotsa t'other nite"... "..ahhh, didn't know that... that'll be the trick of it then" conversation from last night. oops, just did.

and yup, technically speaking i've been around since the early 80s in fact. so i was certainly around when soundgarden were tunesmithering. wouldn't have called them to mind as a comparison otherwise.

Re: Millionaire + Span + Siamese - London 100 Club

Do Millionaire sound anything like the bloody wonderful swagger of the Evil Superstars from whence the singer came...(and what ever happened to the Evil Superstars singer who was FAR too cool for words..)...ad I don't half miss dEUS, while we're on the subject of great Belgians... if they were around QOTSA would have a whole lot of competition...a champions league indeed!

dEUS

they did release an album earlier this year which only seems to exist in cd exchange.

i dunno if they have split up or what. seems weird. very weird. i want them back too, cus if they have split, i never got to see them!

Re: dEUS

they haven't split up. they're just on a break. Singer Tom barman is working on his debutfilm. They'll be back soon.

Re: Millionaire + Span + Siamese - London 100 Club

Evil Superstars singer Mauro Pawlowski released a few solo-records and is now in a new band with Bettie Serveert-singer Carol Van Dijk: Shadowgraphic
City. But I don't think these are easy to find in the UK. Millionaire R-O-C-K!

Millionaire

Evil Superstars are getting back together for just one gig this sunday in Brussels, they'll be playing Sleep's Jerusalem, a one hour song.
ps: The show isn't sold out, yet...
