I’ll get straight to the point.
Last night I went to see an all-female band from Brighton called Electrelane. They blew me away. I’ve never heard anything quite like it in my life before.
Totally new, totally cool and totally brilliant.
It’s difficult to actually describe their style of music, but try to imagine a combination of Motorhead, Kraftwerk, Man or Astroman? and Mogwai that you can dance to..
An incredibly fast paced motorik beat that barely lets up for a minute, wild hammond organ wigouts, fantastic fuzz guitar, house music style pulsing noises and punk basslines.. but all with a sort of beautifully understated post-rock elegance and no tedious retro-kitsch whatsoever.
They don’t smile or speak the entire time they’re on the stage and they’ve got a pleasantly bizarre slideshow projected behind them.
And they were playing in front of 14 people. And most of these were drunken buggers there simply for the promise of girrrls on stage. Which left just myself and two or three others standing at the front gaping open-mouthed.
Sadly, this band don’t seem to have gotten much media attention, but do yourself a favour and check them out - they make the most exciting and innovative music I’ve heard in ages.
That is all.
