The mere sight of him is enough to set alarm bells ringing. Resplendent in luminous pink shell suit and black platform shoes, the diminutive figure of Bobby Conn eyes the slightly nervous crowd and welcomes us into his weird world. “Come a little closer,” he hisses, “there’s no point in playing to an audience you can’t see…or smell…”
Conn and his oddly-attired band are easy enough to spot. They play a colourful mix of power-pop and avant-garde funk, and are not averse to throwing a bossa-nova slow-dance number into the middle of their set, specifically for “anyone dating tonight”.
If Prince was still bothered about having hit singles, he would surely be envious of Conn’s ability to pen songs like ‘Winners’ and ‘You’ve Come A Long Way'. As with so much of tonight’s material, they are hook-laden masterpieces, held together by Bobby C’s piercing falsetto.
As always, he is accompanied by his wife Monica Bou Bou, who provides violin parts, backing vocals, and deeply unsettling glares. They make a lovely couple, but their deranged theatrics might just be too much for the masses to handle.
