The Rakes

Alan Donohoe - Vocals
Matthew Swinnerton - Guitar/Backing Vocals
Jamie Hornsmith - Bass
Lasse Petersen - Drums

(nicked from clubfandango.co.uk)

The Rakes are a spindly-framed quartet from East London with a set of songs that have drawn rave comparisons to the likes of PIL, Wire and Joy Division. No longer dressed in blood stained uniforms, The Rakes are still unashamedly political and their live experience is, by turns, chaotic, funny, charming, silly, serious, beautiful, moving, aggressive, effeminate, sublime and ridiculous.»

Patrick Wolf

Having been born in County Cork, grown up in London and travelled across Europe in an orchestra, eleven-year-old Patrick Wolf was something of an eccentric, escaping from school troubles on a stolen four-track with viola in hand.

After running from home as a young'un to reside in a run-down lodging on the Richmond riverside, he soon garnered the attentions of Fat Cat Records, who provided Wolf with given an Atari and mixing desk to start recording songs 'properly'.

He found the writings of Angela Carter and the music of Joni Mitchell to be a great inspiration - the way that Mitchell brought the folk narrative and intimacy into pop electricity and the way Carter took fairytales and brought out all the symbols of wolves and ghosts to express her own emotions.

These influences can take Wolf's music in bizarre musical directions, as he fuses dark and haunting tracks alongside childlike rhythmic verse.

Following the critical acclaim that came with Wind In The Wires and debut release Lycanthropy, The Magic Position follows a similarly twisted pop sensibility.»

The Warlocks

Rock n' roll has always been about visceral, dangerous scenes.

Think of the Velvet Underground playing "Heroin" at the Electric Circus, or the Rolling Stones onstage at Altamont Raceway, staggering through "Sympathy For The Devil." These are palpable sensations generating orgone energy. Above all, these images conjure up music as an experience.

The band features JC Rees on guitar, Corey Lee Granet on guitar, Laura Grisby on tambourine, organ and vocals, and newest addition, Bobby Martine on bass. There are two drummers -- Danny Hole and Jason Anchondo --bashing away simultaneously on full-sized kits. At the vortex of this cross-fire hurricane is guitarist/lead vocalist Bobby Hecksher, who writes all of the band's songs, whether they're fourteen-minute gotterdammerung assaults or pastoral acoustic-strummed meditations.

After months of playing shows in L.A., and up and down the West Coast, the Warlocks were brought to the attention of Greg Shaw, co-owner of Bomp! Records. Here's another image: in October 2000, just days before Halloween, Hecksher scrawled his name in his own blood on a two-album record contract. Their first release, a six-song eponymous EP, arrived in November 2000. The second, Rise And Fall, was released in October 2001. Both albums received critical praise in the pages of CMJ New Music Report, Phoenix New Times, L.A. Weekly, New York Press, Slug, Magnet and dozens of ink-stained glossies and alt-weeklies, and on various music-related websites. They were named one of Alternative Press' "100 Bands To Watch." After gaining notoriety as openers on U.S. tours with Nikki Sudden, and close friends, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Warlocks successfully headlined 2 more tours of their own, and continue their conquest of America today.

In 2002, the Warlocks signed with Birdman Records, the L.A.-based indie label owned by Dave Katznelson -- a former Warner Bros A&R guy, responsible for signing the Flaming Lips, Mudhoney, the Boredoms, Sonic Boom and Nick Cave. The Summer of 2002 saw the release of the limited edition Phoenix EP, whose 4 tracks clocked in at an impressive 65 min. This month's release of the Phoenix Album has the band scoring big with rave reviews in Spin, MOJO, and Alternative Press, not to mention, the single "Baby Blue" blasting across America as "Coolest Song in the World this Week", on Little Steven's Underground Garage radio show. A quick trip to the UK brought the band back to the US with a NME BRAT nomination for "best new band" and all the HYPE that England can muster just in time to join Interpol on tour. They released their most recent l.p, Heavy Deavy Skull Lover on, psych specialist label, Tee Pee Records, after an album long stint at Mute Records in 2005.»

Ipso Facto

Ipso Facto are Rosalie Cunningham (vocals, guitar), Cherish Kaya (keys), Victoria Smith (drums) and Samantha Valentine (bass). T

hey play a monochrome psychedelica. Everything is taut black and white; guitars sound like they’re being played through straitjackets, the organ lines like slowly snapping ice. Though it’s something more than a Horrors-esque revivalism of dark garage-pop; Ipso Facto posses a cutting edge of melody and melancholy whilst most bands struggle with the crux of their own conviction.

Banjo or Freakout

Lean, fresh circular sound.

"Right... Banjo or Freak Out was born after spending a night waiting for my girlfriend in a flat in Hackney, London. She was working and I was in this place with other people I didn't want to talk to so i turned on my girlfriend’s computer and started to mess around with a music program.

"The first song I 'wrote' was called
'Freak Out', the second Jim O'Rourke' but it's probably better if you don't hear them.

"From here I started to see making music with computer was something really different. You can dick around with a stupid sound for ages. It's great!

"I work with one rule, a bitch of a rule, my rule is to record every track just one time. No second chance. But I can adjust things by changing the sounds with my cheap mac software. Lots of fun. You should try it.

"It took me a while to put these songs on MySpace because my focus was on my other band but they did finally make it here. Enjoy the songs. There are a lot more."

'so you want to stay?' 'yes, i do. there are possibilities here. we ought to explore them.'

Lion Club

Lion Club formed early 2006 as a 4 piece; Lewis(15); Matt(16); Alex.B(16); and Kurt(15). We played several local gigs under the name of The Capulets until July time when we played our first London show with Trafalgar. We played another several shows with the likes of; The Enemy; The Svengalis; Talk Taxis; and Dustins Bar Mitzvah, until in September we decided to have a break and decide what we wanted to do. Out went Kurt and in came the drum machine. We found the sound we enjoyed playing and got ourselves a new name. In March 2007, we played our first gig as Lion Club; since then we've been billed with bands such as; We Smoke Fags; Ulterior; Party Shank; Vicarious Bliss (Ed Banger); and Autokratz (Kitsune). We are currently writing new material, and preparing our live set for our forthcoming summer shows. Bring on 2007! The Lion's have arrived.
