About the artists
Arctic Monkeys
Alex Turner: guitar/vocals
Jamie Cook: guitar
Andy Nicholson: bass (left 2006)
Matt Helders: drums
Nick O'Malley: bass
Formed back in 2002 and hailing from the High Green area of Sheffield, Arctic Monkeys were the success story of 2006. Their first two singles, 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor' and 'When The Sun Goes Down' reached number one, and their debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not also climbed to the top of the albums chart in its first week. It's the fastest-selling debut album in British history (as of February 2007). NME has named it the fifth-greatest UK album of all time.
The name? Says Helders: "Jamie just always wanted to be in a band called Arctic Monkeys. Which is a cool name." (Prefix Magazine).
The fame? They don't like it, still. Before they were signed, the band banned talent scouts from their shows. Like peers Bloc Party, Arctic Monkeys have never seemed wholly at home in front of camera lenses and when a journalist comes a-snooping.
The band's MySpace site - "[When we went number one in England] we were on the news and radio about how MySpace has helped us. But that's just the perfect example of someone who doesn’t know what the fuck they’re talking about. We actually had no idea what it was" (Prefix Magazine)- is here. Tellingly (?), its headline reads 'Don't believe the hype'.

Lily Allen
Singing and songwriting daughter of actor Keith Allen, Lily Allen hit the headlines in the summer of 2006 when her debut single, 'Smile', raced to number one. Her first long-player, Alright, Still, reached number two in the album chart.
Regularly outspoken and often amusing, Allen's remarks regarding celebrity culture and her alleged pop peers are always worthy of attentions.

Doves
- Jimi Goodwin - vocals, bass, guitar
- Jez Williams - guitar, keyboards
- Andy Williams - drums
The last recordings as Sub Sub, featuring guest vocalists Bernard Sumner from New Order and Tricky, and tracks like the expansive and decidedly un-disco 'Firesuite' all but demanded a name change mindful of a rockier and more experimental direction. And if 'Ain't No Love' was a right turn for the hell of it, then 1998's 'Cedar EP' saw them back on course - displaying intentions and influences they had carried with them most of their lives. Three EPs lovingly packaged and released on their own Casino label ('Cedar EP' October '98, 'Sea Song' May '99 and 'Here It Comes' October '99) garnered a raft of glowing reviews. Doves signed to Heavenly Recordings and consolidated with the eerie 'The Cedar Room' in March 2000.
Lost Souls, a debut LP released at the same time, was a genuine thing of beauty, wrought from hard bitten experience. Nobody could have planned for the attention it brought them. "Do we plan things? No!!" says Jimi. Since then they have toured and talked and toured some more. Unafraid of hard graft, they made time to record wherever and whenever. The Last Broacast (2002), a record which realises all expectations, is the unbelievably assured result. These are early days but, save a new LP from a miraculously resurrected Jimi Hendrix, we are talking about a record that clearly deserves early reservation in those end of year lists. "We hope people will hear more optimism in there than last time. We can only write about what happens and what has happened has been good so some of that is starting to shine through in the writing," says Andy.
Biography from Heavenly100 Website»
Andrew Bird
Andrew Bird is a classically trained violinist who cut his teeth playing for swing revivalists The Squirrel Nut Zippers, before releasing three wildly varied albums with Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire.
With the release of 2004's Weather Systems however, Bird began his solo career. With a voice like a matinee idol and a looping pedal, he creates vast and incomparable music, aglow and haunting. He met with huge critical acclaim with Andrew Bird & The Mysterious Production of Eggs in 2005 and when not guesting on a variety of releases (including My Morning Jacket's Z and Dosh's The Lost Take) is currently working on Armchair Apocrypha, due Spring 2007.»
Vampire Weekend
Vampire Weekend is:
Ezra Koenig, Rostam Batmanglij, Christopher Tomson, Chris Baio
In their words:
We are specialists in the following styles: "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa", "Upper West Side Soweto", "Campus", and "Oxford Comma Riddim".
Band of Horses
Band of Horses was formed by Ben Bridwell (guitar, vocals) and Mat Brooke (guitar) in 2004 after the break-up of their previous band, the legendary Carissa's Wierd. The group initially gained attention from Sub Pop records after opening for Iron & Wine at his shows in the Seattle area. The band released their reverb-soaked debut full-length album, Everything All the Time recorded in 2005 with producer Phil Ek on March 21, 2006. The album recieved critical-acclaim upon release and sold well. The band often draw comparisons to My Morning Jacket (largely due to the vocal similarities between Bridwell and My Morning Jacket lead singer Jim James) as well as Built To Spill.
On July 25, 2006, Mat Brooke left Band of Horses to focus on his other band, Grand Archives (who have since also signed to Sub Pop), leaving Bridwell as the sole songwriting force. 2007 saw the band visit the UK for the first time, taking in a set at ATP versus The Fans as well as a handful of dates across the country.
The band's second album, Cease to Begin, was released October 2007.
Members:
Ben Bridwell (Vocals/Guitar)
Rob Hampton (Guitar)
Creighton Barrett (Drums)
Ryan Monroe (Keys/BV's)
Tyler Ramsey (Guitar)

Beirut
So what would you do if you were an 18-year-old A-student in Albuquerque, New Mexico? That's the question that faced Beirut's Zach Condon a few years back and, luckily for the human race, he chose to bugger off across Europe and fill his head with Eastern European harmonies which on his return he melded with his pop upbringing to form Gulag Orkestar, possibly 2006's standout album.
A sojourn in France inspired follow-up album The Flying Club Cup, while EP March of the Zapotec took influence from Mexican music. Condon is now considering which culture to rip off next.

Mew
- Jonas Bjerre - vocals, guitar
- Bo Madsen - guitar
- Johan Wohlert - bass (left April 2006)
- Silas Graae - drums
All pop stories start somewhere. Some start in bars, some in clubs, some in moshpits. For Mew, this particular story started with the end of the world.
The end of the world on celluloid that is. Brought together at school whilst making a film on the destruction of nature, Jonas Bjerre, Bo Madsen, Johan Wohlert, and Silas Graae formed a friendship over the earth's demise that was destined to flourish. Although the end result was somewhat clumsy, the bond built on their shared interests in music and film was to lead to the creation of Mew.
Mew’s armoury of tunes began as straightforward homages to their own heroes (Dinosaur Jr, My Bloody Valentine) but swiftly blossomed into a sound that was uniquely Mew. Their chances of clinching a deal in Denmark however seemed remote, as they were musically out of step with a record industry obsessed with plastic pop and Aqua. So Mew took the initiative and formed their own label Evil Office and set about releasing their own material. In setting up Evil Office, Mew were doing more than taking matters into their own hands. Johan remembers the feeling that they were “making a stand.. We learned loads and, most importantly, it gave us the opportunity to sign to anybody else, should we get an offer."
After releasing two albums, A Triumph For Man and Half the World Is Watching Me and with a great live reputation it didn’t take long for Epic Records, and subsequently Columbia/Sony BMG, to pick up on the buzz. Mew kept their Evil Office imprint and their first 'big' single 'Am I Wry? No' and follow-up'She Came Home For Christmas' were both released twice, and both flirted with the top 40. Whilst it received great reviews the subsequent album, Frengers, made little impact on the music-buying public's consciousness.
Although Sony have a reputation for being hard-nosed with acts that don't find instant success, they retained the services of Mew and fourth album Mew and the Glass Handed Kites was released in late 2005. Bassist Johan Wohlert, meanwhile, announced the birth of his first child, and subsequently left the band in April 2006 to dedicate himself to his family full-time.

Jaga Jazzist
From their website:
"Ever since the beginning Jaga Jazzist have searched and looked ahead - beyond time and trends. Back in 1994 (at this time some of the members were only 14 years old) they released their first album ”Jævla Jazzist Grete Stitz” (now deleted and out of print). An album about trying without fear of failing, but most importantly the first tiny step towards something special.
With ”Magazine” from 1998 (re-issued with bonus material by Smalltown Supersound in 2004), the band came even closer to the formula that today is the basis in the Jaga Jazzist sound. But it was first with ”A Livingroom Hush” in 2001, that Jaga Jazzist fully blossomed with an album that put Jaga Jazzist on the map and defined their unique sound world. With this album the band got an international record deal through Ninja Tune, something which gave them the opportunity to tour extendedly. For people outside of Norway this was the very sign of the Jaga Jazzist.
With 10 members, you also gets 10 different opinions, feelings and taste. With a result that the band never stands still. Instead of sucking on the successful formula of ”A Livingroom Hush”, they wanted to take their sound even further with the next album. To the extreme one might say. The result was 2003`s ”The Stix” album. This was Jaga Jazzist`s take on electronic music, an album characterized by its intricate drum patters and rolling beats.
After heavily touring, the time was come for the next chapter in the Jaga Jazzist history, ”What We Must”. After months with writing new material, the band went into studio in Spydeberg out in the Norwegian woods, to record the demo now known as the Spydeberg Session. This demo, recorded in one take in one day, showed another a new side of Jaga Jazzist. A sound that was closer to their live sound than ever before. For us close to the core of the band heard the band members talk about this as their rock album. But rock in a Jaga Jazzist way that is. And this is the essential with Jaga Jazzist, they have created their own signature sound, and each new offering is variations of the signature sound. This is what characterizes all great bands, and this is what characterizes Jaga Jazzist. Listening to the Spydeberg session it became evident that the band was influenced by as different styles as British shoegazer guitar pop from the early nineties to 70`s prog rock. An Illogical combination on the paper that Jaga Jazzist made pure logic.
After the Spydeberg session, the band went on a 14 shows tour of Canada and USA where they tested their new material. And directly from this tour they went with producer Marcus Schmickler to Notwist`s studio in Weilheim, Germany, and after that to Schmickler`s own studio in Cologne. Here they recorded the basis of the album. After a couple of months break, the band completed and mixed the album in Propeller Music Division in Oslo, Norway, with producer Kåre Christoffer Vestrheim and Mike Hartung.
The result is ”What We Must”
Jaga Jazzist is a restless soul, going in many directions at the same time, but always going forward. Fast. The band always pushes the boundaries, both personal and musical. That is why they are impossible to categorize. And that is why they are special. Jaga Jazzist is something natural and beautiful. A necessity. For both them and us.
They are just Jaga Jazzist. And this is what they must."»
Satyricon
As is true for all musical genres, black metal has its share of clichés. Enter stage left: the devil himself, hailed by cacophonous guitar riffs, swathed in pompous keyboard orchestrations, a grotesque pandemonium of noise and blasphemous imagery, worshipped by hordes of black-clad youths trying their hardest to be different.
The theatrical horror of many black metal bands is easy to ridicule, but behind these superficial impressions lies something deeply disturbing, a menacing presence perfectly evoked by Norway's Satyricon on their aptly titled last album VOLCANO. Never a band to reiterate the obvious, the Oslo-based two-piece has made a remarkable career out of shaping the true core of one of the most uncompromising and extreme genres in musical history. Their aim has always been to explore the musical logic behind the darkest emotions, to add a defined aural structure to the metaphysical darkness of human existence.

Suburban Kids With Biblical Names
Like their name suggests, Suburban Kids with Biblical Names draw on influences from the highly literate and playful '90s U.S. indie scene. Traces of Silver Jews, Pavement, and Magnetic Fields can be heard. But much more than actually sounding like these bands, the near-unique Suburban Kids with Biblical Names share their penchant for mixing intelligent and humorous lyrics with irresistible classic pop melodies, electronic beats, and quirky instrumentation.
The band name isn't just a Silver Jews homage either: Peter and Johan are actually suburban kids -- from Haninge, just outside Swedish capital Stockholm -- with undeniably biblical names.
The self-consciously geeky pop duo first appeared with the EP #1 on Labrador Records in 2004, after generating something of a buzz through the Internet. With their first release, featuring the sublime meta-indie pop anthem "Rent a Wreck" as the EP's lead-off track, they already seemed destined for underground stardom.
The next EP, #2, was released in the spring of 2005, including another classic A-side, the inde pop-meets-Afro-pop gem "Funeral Face."
In October 2005 their eagerly anticipated full-length debut, unsurprisingly entitled #3, finally appeared, propelling them further into worldwide indie pop acclaim.
