Editors, formerly known as Snowfield, hail from all over the country but settled in Birmingham in the autumn of 2003. the new band found themselves with a clutch of tracks that will form the basis of their debut album, due later in 2005.

Drawing on their love of early REM, Joy Division and Echo and the Bunnymen, Editors honed an identifiably English sound focused on the grand themes of love, loss and redemption.»

Doves

  • Jimi Goodwin - vocals, bass, guitar
  • Jez Williams - guitar, keyboards
  • Andy Williams - drums
Andy and Jez Williams met Jimi Goodwin when they were 15. They started playing together 10 years ago but, as Jimi notes, "We were wagging school and jamming way before that". As Sub Sub (graduates of a Hacienda-inspired Manchester clubland explosion of the late eighties) the band scored some dance inflected hits which kind of painted them into a corner. The number three single 'Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use)' was released on New Order manager Rob Gretton's label. "We kind of lost our way for a few years", admits Jez.

The last recordings as Sub Sub, featuring guest vocalists Bernard Sumner from New Order and Tricky, and tracks like the expansive and decidedly un-disco 'Firesuite' all but demanded a name change mindful of a rockier and more experimental direction. And if 'Ain't No Love' was a right turn for the hell of it, then 1998's 'Cedar EP' saw them back on course - displaying intentions and influences they had carried with them most of their lives. Three EPs lovingly packaged and released on their own Casino label ('Cedar EP' October '98, 'Sea Song' May '99 and 'Here It Comes' October '99) garnered a raft of glowing reviews. Doves signed to Heavenly Recordings and consolidated with the eerie 'The Cedar Room' in March 2000.

Lost Souls, a debut LP released at the same time, was a genuine thing of beauty, wrought from hard bitten experience. Nobody could have planned for the attention it brought them. "Do we plan things? No!!" says Jimi. Since then they have toured and talked and toured some more. Unafraid of hard graft, they made time to record wherever and whenever. The Last Broacast (2002), a record which realises all expectations, is the unbelievably assured result. These are early days but, save a new LP from a miraculously resurrected Jimi Hendrix, we are talking about a record that clearly deserves early reservation in those end of year lists. "We hope people will hear more optimism in there than last time. We can only write about what happens and what has happened has been good so some of that is starting to shine through in the writing," says Andy.

Patrick Wolf

Having been born in County Cork, grown up in London and travelled across Europe in an orchestra, eleven-year-old Patrick Wolf was something of an eccentric, escaping from school troubles on a stolen four-track with viola in hand.

After running from home as a young'un to reside in a run-down lodging on the Richmond riverside, he soon garnered the attentions of Fat Cat Records, who provided Wolf with given an Atari and mixing desk to start recording songs 'properly'.

He found the writings of Angela Carter and the music of Joni Mitchell to be a great inspiration - the way that Mitchell brought the folk narrative and intimacy into pop electricity and the way Carter took fairytales and brought out all the symbols of wolves and ghosts to express her own emotions.

These influences can take Wolf's music in bizarre musical directions, as he fuses dark and haunting tracks alongside childlike rhythmic verse.

Following the critical acclaim that came with Wind In The Wires and debut release Lycanthropy, The Magic Position follows a similarly twisted pop sensibility.»

Mew

  • Jonas Bjerre - vocals, guitar
  • Bo Madsen - guitar
  • Johan Wohlert - bass (left April 2006)
  • Silas Graae - drums

All pop stories start somewhere. Some start in bars, some in clubs, some in moshpits. For Mew, this particular story started with the end of the world.

The end of the world on celluloid that is. Brought together at school whilst making a film on the destruction of nature, Jonas Bjerre, Bo Madsen, Johan Wohlert, and Silas Graae formed a friendship over the earth's demise that was destined to flourish. Although the end result was somewhat clumsy, the bond built on their shared interests in music and film was to lead to the creation of Mew.

Mew’s armoury of tunes began as straightforward homages to their own heroes (Dinosaur Jr, My Bloody Valentine) but swiftly blossomed into a sound that was uniquely Mew. Their chances of clinching a deal in Denmark however seemed remote, as they were musically out of step with a record industry obsessed with plastic pop and Aqua. So Mew took the initiative and formed their own label Evil Office and set about releasing their own material. In setting up Evil Office, Mew were doing more than taking matters into their own hands. Johan remembers the feeling that they were “making a stand.. We learned loads and, most importantly, it gave us the opportunity to sign to anybody else, should we get an offer."

After releasing two albums, A Triumph For Man and Half the World Is Watching Me and with a great live reputation it didn’t take long for Epic Records, and subsequently Columbia/Sony BMG, to pick up on the buzz. Mew kept their Evil Office imprint and their first 'big' single 'Am I Wry? No' and follow-up'She Came Home For Christmas' were both released twice, and both flirted with the top 40. Whilst it received great reviews the subsequent album, Frengers, made little impact on the music-buying public's consciousness.

Although Sony have a reputation for being hard-nosed with acts that don't find instant success, they retained the services of Mew and fourth album Mew and the Glass Handed Kites was released in late 2005. Bassist Johan Wohlert, meanwhile, announced the birth of his first child, and subsequently left the band in April 2006 to dedicate himself to his family full-time.

!!!

Following a titillating tour in summer '95 between Popesmashers and Black Liquorice, !!! officially formed upon their return at one of the famously ultra-hot, all-night Sacramento, CA dance parties. The tour had provided the attendees - and a few of the band members - with plenty to think about. Black Liquorice came with disco covers without the kitsch, and Popesmashers followed with loud, propulsive noise. The combination of these styles seemed odd to some, but it worked in the most primal sense, leading the aforementioned band members and others to wonder - Why NOT feel this? All the fucking time.

The eight members of !!! had grown up playing various breeds of punk and experimental music (!!! frontman Nic was vocalist for the infamous hardcore band, Yah Mos), and increasingly found themselves wanting to play music in the vein of the stuff they were dancing to. Which is not to say !!! are a punk band, nor a funk band, for that matter. They are both. And neither.

The !!! symbol was chosen, rather than a conventional band name, because it reflects the excitement shared by the band members, mixed with an intense desire to shake things up. They have toured the U.S. repeatedly, amassing a sizeable following thanks to their cathartic live shows. The years spent train-hopping, hitch-hiking and touring DIY style have forged a desire to take !!! everywhere, fast.

!!! shares three of its members with Out Hud, including Tyler Pope, who is also in LCD Soundsystem. !!! has released a 12" split EP with Out Hud, as well as a seven-inch on Hopscotch called "Dis-ease". A self-titled debut came out on GSL in 2000, which included the nine minute manifesto, "There's No Fucking Rules, Dude" - an exhortation to forget your worries and just shake your ass... dude. Got it?

!!! is John Pugh (drums), Nic Offer (vocals), Allan Wilson (percussion, horns), Mario Andreoni (guitar), Tyler Pope (guitar, keys), Justin Vandervolgen (bass, sound engineering tweaks), Dan Gorman (percussion, horns), and Jason Racine (percussion).»

The Gossip

The Gossip (Beth (vox), Kathy (drums) and Nathan (guitar)) are a modern-day punk rock dream come true.

They all arrived to Olympia, Washington from Searcy, Arkansas, in the past two years, formed a band in the fall of 1999 and blew Olympia away with their onstage hip-thrustin', hand-clappin', and riff rockin' sass that is so down pat it's as if they've been fine-tuning their performance for years. They caught the eye of local Olympia heroes, Sleater-Kinney, who decided to whisk the band away with them on their first US tour ever for two months.

The Gossip’s debut album, “thats not what i heard” (Released on Kill Rock Stars), is a remarkable introduction to these hot-trottin' rock and holy rollers, a fine follow up to their blistering debut K Records single. Singing a fallen angel's punk-bruised blues, Beth's pop-gospel voice evokes years of rough ridin' in love's fast lane, seeing things that would make a lesser person hit the brakes and have a breakdown. With all the guts and glory of Nathan's greaser Gories guitar riffs and the Bratmobile feel of Kathy's backbeat, the Gossip have no trouble talking the talk and walking the walk as they tell it like it is. Their live shows are an experience like no other, making their shows something not to be missed.»

Saint Etienne

Saint Etienne are...

  • Sarah Cracknell - vocals
  • Ian Catt - guitar, keyboards
  • Bob Stanley - keyboards
  • Pete Wiggs - keyboards
Formed by childhood friends Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs in 1991, Saint Etienne immediately carved a niche with their unique brand of quintessentially English, breezy indie-pop. The first album, the classic Foxbase Alpha set out the agenda: coo-ing vocals from new-recruit Sarah Cracknell, lush Northern Soul beats and a giddy 60s pop sensibility unheard of in the indie-schmindie world of the early 90s.

Foxbase Alpha and the follow up, 93's So Tough became the band's love letter to London. The lyrics are infused with (fairly) idealised London-centric imagary whilst playful vocal and musical samples are interwoven into the mix.

After the folk-tinged Tiger Bay in '94 and the 'He's On The Phone' single of '95, the band split. Stanley and Wiggs went into production and Cracknell released a solo album, the Etienne-esque Lipslide. Mercifully however, they returned in '98 with the more euro-sounding Good Humor. Produced by The Cardigans' Tore Johansson (quite fitting as The Cardigans were one of the many Et-influenced bands to emerge in the 90s) it saw the band move away from the more 'dancey' soft electro vibe of old to a more striaght-forward 'live band' sound. Though it has many super tracks, Good Humor disappointed many hard-core fans. It's follow up though, more than made up for it.

A new decade, a new century, a new beginning, a new label (Mantra). A gorgeous, sprawling epic-as-single, 'How We Used To Live', and the serious headphone-music album Sound Of Water showed that Saint Et were starting the 'noughties' as they did the nineties: by crafting shimmering modern pop music in their own distinctive style; walking their own path; declaring their undying love for love, life and music.

"Put on your teenage head - this is a love thing!"

65daysofstatic is currently Joe Fro, Paul Wolinski, Rob Jones and Simon Wright; Feedle, Iain Armstrong and Gareth Hughes are former members.

The band are primarily instrumental, using beats and glitches alongside crunched guitars and hardcore drums.

65days originally formed, allegedly, to try and write music to fit the unreleased and little known John Carpenter flick Stealth Bomber starring Kurt Russell. Set over "65 Days of Static", a period of time after some unknown global infrastructre and communications breakdown, it also gave 65 their name.

Grace Jones

Grace Jones - born Grace Mendoza in 1948 - is an actress and singer whose work in the 1970s attracted her a large gay following; she could often be seen at New York's Studio 54 club with Andy Warhol.

Partial to a cover version, the early 1980s saw Jones re-work material by the likes of Iggy Pop and Roxy Music; at this period she embraced New Wave and reggae, releasing albums such as Nightclubbing (1981), Slave To The Rhythm (1985) and Inside Story (1986).

Still much respected and acclaimed, with many a top 40 single to her name, Grace Jones signed to Wall of Sound in 2008 to release her new LP Hurricane.

Jeremy Warmsley

Jeremy Warmsley lives in London and started making electronic music with songs in them in January 2005. He is currently putting out records with the help of the lovely people at Transgressive Records. He lives in London and is half-French.

A songwriter since the age of seventeen, he had an epiphany in Jan 05, realised all the music he'd ever made up till then bored him, and started again from scratch. Since then his music has encompassed a curious mixture of the new and the old, the traditional and the atypical, all things archaic or experimental. He insists on self-producing all his songs, only bringing in other musicians to sing backing vocals.

Jeremy's live appearances are wildly unpredictable; in the past six months he has played as many times with his seven-piece backing band the LMNOPs (including laptop-ist and trombone section) as he has on his own. Recent gigs (including a tour with Regina Spektor) have seen him ably assisted by pianist TOM ROGERSON, Jeremy singing and switching between guitar, piano and percussion.

Having put out a single in June 05 and an EP in November 05, he is preparing to release his next EP, Other People's Secrets. With contributions from ADAM BEACH (also of Optimist Club) on bass, TOM ROGERSON on piano, MATT INGRAM on drums (all members of the LMNOPs), as well as a string quartet and brass section, it will be his first record to feature musicians other than himself. It is out on Transgressive on April 10th.

Bishi

22 year old singer, musician & DJ Bishi was British born to a Bengali musical family. She started singing when she was 2 years old during a car journey to Sheffield. Her mother, an Indian Classical singer warned her against the dangers of a musical life.

Undeterred she followed her heart taking secret lessons in voice & piano. An outcast at school because of her ‘unique’ dress sense she would escape into London’s galleries, concert halls & nightclubs.

At the age of 13 she met club promoter & musician Matthew Glamorre at a Minty concert & they became instant friends, they have been collaborating ever since.

Her passion for world music, contemporary composition & experimental electronic work lead her to become star DJ & chanteuse of The Siren Suite – Britain’s only ‘classical’ music nightclub. The experience inspired her to study Sitar under Gaurav Mazumdar, Grammy nominee & senior disciple of Ravi Shankar.

However Bishi is best known as the central DJ & ‘face’ of London’s most experimental & talked about underground nightclub – Kash Point. Her irreverent & unflinching approach to current trends has created a unique sound, impossible to define but loved by many.

Bishi records as a solo artist, collaborating with various producers & musicians to create a vibrant and individual form of pop music. Her sound fuses strong melodies, electronic beats & traditional instruments with layers of lush vocals. The live performances are always greatly anticipated & electrically received.

Press features so far include Sleaze Nation, ID, DJ Mag, Time Out, Flux & Elle Girl; she also presents & DJs on the weekly Kash Point radio show.

Bishi is working on new material exploring ways to fuse Bulgarian vocals with Sitar & Western popular song structures.

One of the most talked about & anticipated young artists in the UK today Bishi is currently unsigned. She has chosen to take her time developing a new sound through small independent labels & limited releases. To date she has been featured on three compilations; the forthcoming collaboration with Brainlove Records is her second solo underground E.P. release.

Of Montreal

Of Montreal hail from Athens, Georgia. They've released five long-players in the States and built a strong following through extensive coast to coast touring and their close links with the Elephant 6 collective.

Their new album, Aldhils Arboretum, is available through the Track and Field Organisation and will be the band's first official UK release.

There are few bands whose music is as unabashedly happy as Of Montreal. Their songs soar and weave with energy and goodwill, daring listeners to walk away without a smile on their face. Listening to Of Montreal recalls the sweet aural psychedelia of Syd Barrett or Robyn Hitchcock.

Of Montreal's music floats and spins. Most of Kevin Barnes' songs are bittersweet paeans to heartbreak. Even the band's name commemorates a love gone wrong (he met a girl from Montreal, they fell in love, and she broke his heart, so he started a band and named it after her hometown). But heartbreak be damned! Everything is OK when you're listening to Of Montreal.»

Sky Larkin are Katie (tip-toe guitar/vox/Korg), Nestor aka Nestaaargh! (drums 'n' grunts) and Douglas Adams (bass/Korg/sci-fi classics).

If that made sense, perhaps you'll want to befriend them at their MySpace page, here.
