Micachu and The Shapes have the sort of colourful sonic ballsiness that we've not been lead to expect from London acts, let alone such pop-oriented ones.
With their tropicalia-infused rhythms, stabs of bowel shaking sub bass and skronky, Beefheart-ed guitars you could easily imagine them at home in the currently much-lauded Los Angeles scene. Twenty-one-year-old Mica Levi, aka Micachu, places them firmly in London though, with the amiable chattiness of Lily Allen and the louche charisma of Pete Doherty allied to music a thousand times more vital, imaginative and fun than 99 per cent of those reference points' output.
The Shapes are one of the most fantastic examples of a backing band refusing to standardise or overwhelm the lead's songs or performance, with Marc Pell's lopsided but immaculately performed drumming and Raisa Khan's sparingly used keyboards giving just enough of a basis for Mica's weary-yet-insouciant musings to hold centre stage, and everyone's attentions.
That they appear to be getting so much of said attention is one of the most promising and reassuring stories in music at the moment. This is very, very exciting stuff.

I saw these
supporting Subtle at Cargo. I enjoyed them big lots.
Loop
They played at Loop yesterday - very very good, although it was a shock three hours later when friend pointed out that Micachu was a girl...
They were awesome at Loop
much like the rest of the festival.

Micachu instore vid if you wanna see-
classical roots
She stems from a classical background so it's great that she has leapt into fame with such fresh originality - it's also promising that an act like her is doing so well in the current scene; she's compared to Lily Allen a lot but she is the real deal; no make-up, no cheap vintage dress, just her androgynous, ballsy and colourful self.
She also makes amazing films too...
Good review...
I love these guys... Mica is just mesmerising.
The sound at the Macbeth wasn't the best though, I've literally heard them sound 10 times better. But I heard the sound is always shit at the Macbeth.
And the bouncer there was a douche. he wouldn't let people on the roof garden unless they were smoking!!?? It's not like people were fighting to get out there.
But, anyways, I hope Micachu gets the credit she deserves for her originality and great band.
