The Gutter Twins

Edit this event

DiSclaimer: The following is not a formal review. Rather, it is an account of the dialogue that took place between our two writers at the show. Were you there? Add your thoughts below.

Kate: I've just realised that when we were outside and I thought I saw Greg Dulli wandering around, but dismissed it because he couldn't possibly have got that portly, I was right. He is that portly.

Rob: That is indeed quite a waistline. He looks like Josh Homme's Mafioso uncle... or a pub landlord. Still, utter legend. First thoughts? Those drums are too loud. That guy's absolutely pounding the shit out of them. 'Idle Hands'? Nah.

Kate: I don't think it's quite as atmospheric as the last time we saw them. Maybe that explains the Leadmill's bizarre decision to keeping spitting out little puffs of dry ice. I can't think of any other explanation for it. Lanegan's vocal isn't loud enough either; I just want to hear him growling over the top of some nasty blues.

['Seven Stories Underground']

Kate: Actually, now you can hear him in comparison to Dulli it sounds amazing again. I think that's the best way to enjoy Mark Lanegan: having him sing against someone with a normal, human vocal. It just makes his sound unimaginably feral. That's why the Isobel Campbell stuff works so well.

Rob: First album, agreed. Their second is pretty forgettable though. I think with Lanegan he maybe needs constant change, because that Soulsavers stuff was great, The Gutter Twins' Saturnalia was cool, too, but tonight a lot of it sounds like classic rock. And that's not what anybody wants from Lanegan. As for the lead guitarist at the back there, he thinks he's Eric bloody Clapton - check out that gurn. Wait-a-sec, did I just see Dulli dancing like he's at a wedding?

Kate: Erm... yeah. It was pretty bad wasn't it? I hope he keeps that to a minimum for the rest of the evening. It kind of ruins the sense of cool a bit, doesn't it? Yeah, and I kind of agree about the new stuff. It's not doing as much for me as anything off Saturnalia. I like them best when they're just doing wall-of-sound filthy blues. Speaking of which, actually, I really hope they do 'St James' Infirmary Blues'. Far and away the best version I've ever heard of that song.

[On cue, _'St James' Infirmary Blues' _starts up]

Kate: Hooray! This pisses all over the White Stripes' version. Mark Lanegan's just so perfectly suited to this kind of thing.

Rob: Yeah, agreed, it's an awesome version. When they're doing stuff like this, these two have the whole gravitas thing pretty much down to a tee. In terms of setting a mood, there's few better but I just wish they'd reign in the more indulgent, bloated moments. The backing band could maybe be trimmed down too - three guitarists a lot of the time, and for what? What they need to do is make sure Dulli plays an instrument of every song...

Kate: ...Yeah, because when his hands are free...

['Front Street']

Kate: This is probably my favourite song on Saturnalia. The lyrics are just absolutely stunning.

Rob: ...but there he goes again with the wedding disco dancing.

Kate: Yeah, it's a shame. It is kind of hampering my enjoyment of the song. It's very nearly laughable, unfortunately.

Rob: And that's the botton line, I guess, and the real difference between this and the last time we saw them: it's somehow a bit less serious, a bit less affecting, because of these momentary lapses. When they're good, they're still very, very good, but at times - important times in the set tonight - these twin stars are inadvertently dragging their hallowed reputations down towards, well, the gutter. It's still a long way down, mind...

Nice idea for a review

I'd be pretty pissed if they were chatting that much stood next to me during the gig.

Does this suggest the volume at the Leadmill was too low?

Does anyone else agree that somehow Lanegan is YET to record his perfect lp (Bubblegum is by far the closest so far)

See Field Songs, Scraps at Midnight or Whiskey For The Holy Ghost

Or Dust and Sweet Oblivion by the Screaming Trees. All absolutely sublime records, and damn near 'perfect'.

Whiskey for the Holy Ghost

is a better album for me. As is Scraps at Midnight. But I do think the best is yet to come.

The sound was pretty awful but it wasn't quiet enough at the leadmill to have a full conversation like this. They must have been shouting in each others ears all night. Fair assessment of the gig though, it was a bit too 'classic rock' to get excited about.

or

"my girlfriend and i go to a gig and attempt a pitchfork style conceptual review"

;)

Great Screaming Trees lp's

However, whenever I see him at the moment and await the next lp with baited breath I keep expecting something better.

Odd comparison coming: Like Johnny Cash (Rick Rubin) maybe he is just waiting for the perfect producer to grab hold of him and thrash that lp out of him?

There is something about Lanegan that always leaves you hungry for more.

That said, there is no-one better at doing dirty druggy wounded rock than he.Bubblegum is his magnum opus, thus far. Who knows though?I hate to say it, but he may need some fresh tragedy in his life to bring out the genius anew..

The riff to Idle Hands

is a bit Status Quo.

Kramer, have you heard Field Songs? Kicks the pish out of Bubblegum, as good as it is.

Just added it to my Amazon wish list!

Not quite sure why I don't own it to be honest.

Thanks Hugo.

Those records he made...

...where Mike Johnson accompanies him on guitar are incredible - his best.

Scraps At Midnight

is his best. I haven't listened to Dust in ages - think I'lll give that a spin when i get home tonight :-)

There's no denying that Lanegan

has made some fine fine albums both solo and with the Screaming Trees and for a while his QOTSA collab was interesting... but I think he's spreading himself a bit thin what with the Soulsavers, Guuter Twins and Isobell Campbell et al. I caught Gutter Twins live in the US a month or two ago and it was really pretty dull (it was at the end of a very long day though...). In fact Lanegan at the Astoria at the back end of the Bubblegum tour was one of the worst shows I've ever seen... He just needs to (in my opinion) release another solo album - free of Dulli, Homme etc etc.
I'm a fine of his work with Mike Johnson (live they were pretty dull too though...). But respect to the man for keeping on keeping on.

liverpool gig

was a thorough disappointment. I fall into Team Dulli. Saturnalia had the dark gravitas going on but live, the show has none of the uplift, humour, sassyness or swagger of a twilight singers show. Lanegan's intensity isn't watchable after more than two songs and it clearly pulls Dulli back from the lighter moments that makes his shows an event. The songs just sounded bloated. Even though the collaboration looks great on paper, I'm now convinced it doesn't bring out the best in either of them...

Bubblegum

Is certainly my favorite Lanagen record to date...

Oh and...

Great feature!

Liverpool gig

Completely disagree. Thought the Liverpool gig was superb, and I'm not even a big fan. Also took a friend who'd heard nowt off the new record and he was buzzing off it.

I also

disagree with this. Thought they were fantastic throughout (agree with Dulli's dancing being cringeworthy like, and I'd say the guitarist was more like Ringo Starr than Clapton) but yeah, loved it. I nearly came when they did Methamphetamine Blues. Lanegan's voice shattered my kneecaps.

Dulli is god

Whigs - yes
Twilights - yes
Backbeat Band - yes
Gutter Twins - no

the reason being Mark Lanegan is in the band. He is so dull it isn't even funny.

Check out Lanegan

pissing himself at the banter in that photograph.

Rare. Moment.
