Everyone knows that there is a day coming sometime in the future. Some might say ”Come the revolution”. Some prefer to shout “FIDDLESTICKS!!!” Either way, that day isn’t too far away. ’WHY’ I hear you cry? It’s because of OCEANSiZE. And I knew they were coming. I could taste it in the air and feel it in me bones. What do you mean, pah, you’ve never heard of them? A band who manage to blend the idea of rocking yer face in with riffs, but spread them all out along a journey on the ridge of a plateau, through all shades, tones, colours and dimensions. You need them, yes you do. Hear me now, this is math-RAWK! Onwards...
There’s nothing entirely new, though, they do sound like they own records by Tool, the Buckleys, NiN, Slint and Dark Star. There is a lot of calculation and progression that they take you through, but the second the fear that it starts to get pretentious or indulgent, they tear the thoughts up with a riff or a tempo drop or a whispered vocal, slaying any inclination that they’re not THAT good. They swirl their influences altogether until the world’s spin grinds to a hault and gradually begins to twist in reverse. Running up, downward escalators is no longer like a mathematical problem. Everything flows. Banks fill your account with karma and cashola. Vibes, maaan. And maaan, were there a lot of industry diggin’ this tonight at a venue which barely holds 200 people, let alone all these record bags and cigars. They were all here cus they knew they’d find this band, eventually.
I could probably go on and on and on and on about OCEANSiZE who to be quite honest, are absolutely out of this world! They make 95% of the music around at the moment sound as sterile, clinical and mock-melodical when the others rip off someone else’s songs. There’s still 5% worth fighting for and tonight, my friends, it’s only just begun. Muse, beware, they’re coming to kick your cherry off the top of that groupies pert breast! They're coming with 5 songs inside 40 minutes. They're coming armed with integrity, passion and probably several toilet venues full of fans.
Before I leave you, do you know what is best thing about all this? That is that this band push the calibre of creativity up so much that it’s gonna make every band around work that much harder! And that can only be good for all of us. I’ll remember this day for a long time. Your days are numbered, it’s inevitable. Put your fate in their hands people. Trust me.
