Sometimes your best just isn’t going to appeal. Take new Regal Records signings Athlete for instance; things just aren’t going to plan. The drummer has bust his hi-hat and nobody is particularly bothered. The jaggedly soulful merchant that Athlete are trying to flog sounds interesting enough, but the shambles that it’s delivered deems only to irritate.
In a similar vain to an ageing magician, Athlete try that bit extra to entertain with some dubious Supernaturals style harmonies and passable but oh so predictable Beta Band impressions.
‘Westside’, lead track on the forthcoming debut EP entitled ‘The Athlete EP’ (I see what they’ve done there…) informs us that ‘everybody wants to be part of the ‘rock scene’’. Well if this is the state of the competition, who can really argue?
