Pinhole have acquired a big following in their hometown of Liverpool. Their debut EP ‘Breaking Hearts And Windows’ was the tenth best selling single in the local HMV in Christmas week, and there have apparently already been scene of one member being mobbed in a local record store. They’ve played the Lomax numerous times before, but this is their first headlining slot, therefore loads of expectation was heaped upon on the gig.
And boy did they have a hard act to upstage. There are some superficial things about bands that immediately make you fall in love with them; carrying their leads around in a Spiderman* bag is one of, and having a guitarist on crutches that has to sit down during the gig is another. But luckily this brilliance crosses over into the music. The Mighty Saguaro* play epic 10 minute rock odysseys with pounding percussion and crunching guitars. In their drummer they have a true rock eccentric: a Keith Moon lookalike who pounds his drums like they’d just raped his mother, he orders the crown to make the ‘Too Much Rock For One Hand’ sign before the final song, and those with any sense duly oblige. Whether they will be able to transfer their power and energy onto record is one thing, but for now the promise of The Mighty Saguaro** is unquestionable.
The next band on would have had a hard job whoever they were, but Audio Slave, despite their shit name, give a good, solid performance. They also have problems of their own; a complaint or request to the soundman finishes almost every song. But they pull through, and their rock-pop is, while not earth moving, highly enjoyable, and a lot of the crowd seem to enjoy it too.
Despite the brilliance of The Mighty Saguaro, it is *Pinholes night and they fulfil all expectations. Opening with ’City Living’, their best song to date, was a brave move, but the new songs played tonight prove that they’ve got more brilliant tunes where that came from. Well, four at least, as unfortunately it’s a seven-song set that clocks in at under half an hour. ’11.50’ and ’Is This The End?’ already sound like old friends. Their -Clash cover*’I’m so bored of the U.S.A’ is absolutely brilliant. Matt, Ben, Charlie and Bryan are shaping up to people that boys want to be and girls want to be with. They strut the stage like it is their bitch and put absolutely everything into their performance. The future looks incredibly bright for Liverpool’s, and maybe the whole country’s, best new band.
