DiScover Club @ RoTa
Paul Marshall, Wintermute, Joe Gideon And The Shark, and The Gilded Palace Of Sin
About the venue
Notting Hill Arts Club
Train: Westbourne Park (18 mins)
Paddington (18 mins)
Tube: Notting Hill Gate (4 mins)
Directions: take the tube to Notting Hill Gate, then take the LEFT exit. That's left, the left again. Walk down the road for a few minutes but the place is difficult to find as it's not marked outside... It's next to a hairdresser's and opposite a kebab shop. You will notice it by the big wooden doors and velvet rope outside and probably a bouncer too...
THIS is your MySpace link for information on all upcoming RoTa shows. RoTa is held every Saturday at the Arts Club, from 4 til 8, and is free entry. DiS runs its monthly DiScover Club shows there - check the site regularly for details of upcoming DiScover Club shows.
»About the artists
Paul Marshall
Under his other musical guise, Paul Marshall is one half of the noise/disco two-piece Concentration Champ, but anybody expecting his solo project to be anything like the detuned racket of the Champ will be sorely disappointed, or perhaps even pleasantly surprised. Pauls solo work is acoustic based, with lush finger-picked melodies ghosting underneath fragile vocal lines that place him somewhere between Nick Drake, Iron and Wine and Red House Painters. Whilst primarily just Paul and his guitar, other instrumentation drifts in and out of the melancholy passages like silhouettes in fog, while flecks of rhythm are interspersed throughout to add to the lilt of the rolling arpeggios. Expect something quite, quite beautiful.
Wintermute
Dan Howard - Guitar and Vocals
David Hemmings - Guitar and Vocals
Chris Newbould - Bass
Ben Johnson - Drums
Shouty-shout vocals give way to spoken word segments and the whole thing's held together by some of the jerkiest guitar work this side of a Jade Tree compilation. You may not have heard of Wintermute yet, but when you do hear them, expect to be impressed...

The Gilded Palace Of Sin
The Gilded Palace of Sin was formed in late November/early December 2006 when the previous band Vini and Pete were both in stalled.
They went for a night out and contemplated their fates and decided it was for the best if they formed a new band making the kind of music that they liked listening to.
They asked Michelle if she would like to join the band as what they had planned seemed a bit too much for two people.
She said yes.
They immediately called the band The Gilded Palace of Sin.
They had another round or two then went dancing.
After short period of practising they got their first gig from a friend who was promoting a night.
They decided it was probably time to practice a bit harder.
The songs came thick and fast and the first gig went well (although there were few there to see them).
Usually Pete sings and plays guitar, does stuff with computers, etc.
Vini Plays guitar, banjo, drums and sings, etc.
Michelle plays Theremin, glockenspiel, ukulele, jaw harp, music box and percussion, etc.
There are other things they play and do when the need arises.
They all write the words and music for the band.
They like a lot of styles of music and are influenced by lots of bands/artists/films too numerous to mention (have a look at their MySpace for an idea).
The Gilded Palace of Sin has a musical direction, however the band aren’t sure what it is as the music has a way of running away with itself and the band just have to try and keep up with it.
