Ben & Jason and two other guys, step onto the Dingwalls stage with all the right attire. The singer, Ben, has the indie-mohawk. The keyboard player / acoustic guitarist Jason, has bearded bloke-rock chic. The other two sit somewhere behind them on their drums and double bass oozing croons. However you perceive them, Ben & Jason deliver their my-girlfriend-left-me, falsetto filled nu-folk, in such a way, that you can only imagine how wonderful and gorgeous the lady in question was.
It's not all good. There are moments when the set verges down the blandest acoustic roots of Coldplay b-sides but two songs toward the end of their set soar, swoop and free-fall into the hearts of tonight's crowd. A crowd who all seem to be trying just that little bit too hard to look cool too, as their mobiles beep-out some dodgy ditties during all the quiet bits. Although, I didn't hear anyone shout "I'M BEING COOL AT A GIG!!!"
As the night draws to a close you can almost taste the adoration from the rows of fans who bought the album on Monday and already know all the words. Sadly, I can just see Ed Harcourt beaming a grin as he laces up his trainers nice and snug, ready to run past, dragging awards and all the B&J groupies with him for a similar orgy.
