It's roughly five minutes before The View are due onstage at the QMU in Glasgow and they already have the crowd in the palm of their hands, "The View, The View are on Fire!" rings out throughout the crowd at a deafening volume. Not seen since the ole’ Libertines days has this reviewer seen such fan adulation bordering on fanatical. How did they get from small Dundee band to such nose-bleeding heights of fan worship In Glasgow so fast?
"Dunno we got the A8 or whatever down to Glasgow from Dundee I suppose and well people pay to see us" smirks bassist and sometime singer Kieren. Yes indeed. The band open with the shambolic 'Comin Down', which has the sound of a supermarket trolley hurtling down a tenement block down to a tee. And from there the gig doesn’t rest up, as the band pump out hit after hit of sweaty rock ‘n’ roll, including by far the best song of the night, 'Skag Trendy'. Which tells the tale of a local junkie through a barely penetrable Dundonian accent, thrashing guitars and a bass line the godfather of soul would sacrifice a goat for.
Of course the biggest cheer of the night went to the band's first single, ‘Wasted Little DJs', which sounds even greater live than off the record. But, why oh why do people continue attempt singing the anagrammed chorus, it puts a damper on the song when some guy beside you is clearly just making noises and sounds more like a gurning space-monkey on killer-rave drugs.
The View finish with new single 'Superstar Tradesman'. By this point the obsessive crowd have melted into one huge bouncing mass, screaming along to every word like it was their last.
"I like our fans, it is nice to hear people singing your lyrics like."
The View are certainly on fire.
