My Latest Novel

Edit this event

My latest novel? A book about The Pixies, since you ask. Not strictly a novel but more than relevant here: like Black Francis et al, this Glaswegian five-piece have quiet/loud down to a tee with hushed verses and intricate arrangements breaking down into gigantic, cathartic choruses and unabashed shouting matches.

Despite a number of technical hitches, all the nuances of sublime debut album Wolves are recreated tonight with 'The Reputation Of Ross Francis' and 'When We Were Wolves' packing the sort of punch even the best engineers would struggle to recreate on record.

Melodies bubble and build before the four vocalists unleash a torrent of harmonies upon the sparse crowd, who look about ready to turn on their heels and run as the multiple time changes in 'Learning Lego' confuse all but the devout musos in the crowd. You don't need a degree in musicology to appreciate My Latest Novel, though, just open your ears and you'll soon be seduced by the ethereal majesty of their live show.

saw them sunday

for the first time at the ayr burns festival and it blew me away. it was an outdoor stage, which i thought didn't bode well, but i've listened to the album obsessively, so i guess my head filled in the windy bits.

the second half of 'wrongfully i rested' is perfection. the vocal melody on that and sister sneaker sister soul does something strange (and enjoyable) to me.
