The long history of the million selling metal band Metallica goes something like this: 25 years ago, 3 young upstarts formed a band after placing adverts in an American publication. Two of the members would stay on to sell over 100 million albums, a record which would surpass any expectations from fans that would see them on the club circuit in western America.
In 1982, early bassist Ron McGovney left the band because of the arrival of Dave Mustaine; A talented guitarist with drink and drug problems. Mustaine contributed to some of Metallica's early songs, but his increasingly dangerous behaviour led to Ron packing it all in. It didn't take long for the rest of the band to follow suit, arriving to the decision that they should carry on without Mustaine.
By the time of 1983, Metallica had released their debut album Kill 'Em All, and recruited bassist Cliff Burton and guitarist Kirk Hammett. Inspired by the new wave of British heavy metal, Metallica's debut was full of heavy metal riffs, coupled with a fast paced rhythm section courtesy of Lars Ulrich. Two albums followed, Ride the Lightning and Master Of Puppets, with the latter being released on major label Elektra following critical and commercial success.
In September 1986, Metallica went on tour in support of Master Of Puppets but tragically suffered the loss of influential bassist Cliff Burton when their tour bus crashed. Soon after, Jason Newsted was recruited for playing the bass parts in the band. Another album followed; ...And Justice for All. The bands popularity was constantly rising, and they were developing as musicians, which showed in the aforementioned 4th album, and their self titled 5th album.
The album Metallica marked the point where the quartet became a household name, and the biggest metal band in the world. 'Enter Sandman', one of their most popular songs dominated the charts worldwide, and gave teenagers the drive to pick up the guitar and play metal themselves. Predictably, this spawned another two albums from Metallica, but unfortunately was met with less acclaim from fans and critics. Load and Reload didn't keep to the traditional thrash formula, because the band felt a need to experiment with a softer rock sound.
Entering the millennium was a tricky time for the pioneers of the metal scene. Fans illegally downloading off p2p software Napster were attacked by the band, and many were sued, which consequently angered the people that had supported Metallica for so long. To add to the shaky start, bassist Jason Newsted left, and James Hetfield entered rehabilitation.
Fast forward to 2003, and things were starting to look up. Rob Trujillo was recruited to fill Jason's shoes, and St. Anger was seen as a return to form by many fans.
Rick Rubin is to produce Metallica's 9th full length album, which is due for release in early 2007.
"There is something powerful in Metallica, a will, a drive." - James Hetfield (USA today)
SikTh
Formed in Watford early this century, SikTh are:
- Mikee W. Goodman - Vocals, Lyrics, Synths
- Justin Hill - Vocals
- Dan Weller - Guitar, Piano
- Pin - Guitar
- James Leach - Bass
- Dan 'Loord' Foord - Drums/Percussion
The weird-noisecore six piece, a favourite in Japan, spent a year writing and recording demos before self-releasing their debut EP Let The Transmitting Begin, and were quickly picked up by Gut Records.
One year and another EP later, SikTh released their self-produced debut The Trees Are Dead & Dried Out Wait For Something Wild in 2003, before embarking on a tour of Japan with such legends as Anthrax and Dillinger Escape Plan.
Come 2006, SikTh launched their second album Death Of A Dead Day in June on Bieler Bros Records, released in Japan and the US on the 6th of the 6th 06. Good, eh?
»Alice In Chains
Formed in 1987 in Seattle, Washington, USA, by Layne Staley (b. 22 August 1967, Kirkland, Washington, USA; vocals) and Jerry Cantrell (b. 18 March 1966, Tacoma, Washington, USA; vocals, guitar) with Mike Starr (bass) and Sean Kinney (b. 27 June 1966, Seattle, Washington, USA; drums), Alice In Chains developed a sound that mixed Black Sabbath -style riffing with Staley and Cantrell's unconventional vocal arrangements and strong songwriting. Cantrell had drifted from his home in Tacoma to Seattle, homing in on a musician's collective entitled the Music Bank. He brought in the rhythm section of Kinney and Starr, before Staley was recruited from a local funk metal act. After dispensing with their early moniker, "Fuck", they became Alice In Chains, a name invented by Staley for "a parody heavy metal band that dressed in drag".»
Stone Sour
Stone Sour are...
- Corey Taylor - vocals
- Josh Rand - guitar
- Jim Root - guitar
- Shawn Economaki - bass
- Joel Ekman - drums
...their former singer Corey Taylor fronting Stone Sour, and their former drummer Joey Jordison playing guitar in Murderdolls.
Mondo Generator
Side project of Nick Oliveri (y'know the often naked dude from QOSTA).
Mondo Generator started before Nick joined QOTSA. After hooking up with former Kyuss guitarist Josh Homme to form QOTSA, he put Mondo on ice until 2000, when Southern Lord released their debut album, "Cocaine Rodeo". With it's sludgy Black Flag-esque riffs it was superb slice of underground rock and roll. Mondo Generator went back into hibernation until 2002 when Nick resurrected the band, this time enlisting former Kyuss and Fu Manchu drummer Brandt Bjork, earthlings? and QOTSA guitarist Dave Catching and Molly Maguire of earthlings? and yellow #5.»

Secret Machines
All art is a subjective experience, but music is the only art form that can really be experienced in nearly every imaginable context and circumstance. And when just the right music, context and circumstance come together, the experience can be profoundly, inexplicably magical.
Enter Secret Machines, who are set to release their first full length album ‘Now Here Is Nowhere’ in June on 679/Reprise. The 9-track album is markedly different to their highly acclaimed mini-lp ‘September 000’ and a natural progression in the band’s sound, not least because of the 3-year gap between the recording of the two records, and a hell of a lot of playing inbetween.
The latest link in the loose-knit chain that connects Pink Floyd, Neu, Can, Brian Eno, Tangerine Dream, La Dusseldorf, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, The Band, My Bloody Valentine and Spiritualized, Secret Machines play music that’s spatial, ambient, organic, ecstatic, hypnotic, and not a little bit psychedelic. “We’re just trying to make music that connects with people, connects with the cosmos, and connects with the gods,” explains drummer Josh Garza who along with brothers Brandon (vocals, keyboards) and Benjamin Curtis (guitar) make up Secret Machines. It’s music that will definitely take you places — which is appropriate, considering that Secret Machines’ musical quest has been an epic journey in itself which included the band’s relocation from Dallas, Texas to New York.
On 10th May ‘Sad And Lonely’ will be made available at www.thesecretmachines.com as a UK only downloadable single with video. Far from being melancholy as the title may suggest, ‘Sad And Lonely’ hangs on a nailed-down groove and a crashing, blues-banishing chorus and is a live favourite.
Having played only a handful of UK gigs so far, Secret Machines return in May. The band are currently on an extensive tour of N. America with Blonde Redhead picking up hoards of new fans along the way. Their 2 packed-out shows at SXSW this year are testament to the excitement that’s growing around the trio. Secret Machines live is an unmissable experience.»
Living Things
Living Things are brothers Lillian Berlin (vocals, guitar), Eve Berlin (bass) and Bosh Berlin (drums). The three have moved around over the years but have lived longest in St. Louis, Mo.
Living Things will release their debut recording, Black Skies in Broad Daylight, on August 24, 2004 on Geffen Records. The disc was recorded with Steve Albini, who recorded three of Living Things' favorite albums: Nirvana's In Utero, The Breeders' Pod and PJ Harvey's Rid Of Me.
Says Lillian of the band's origins: "It just felt natural for me to play guitar and sing and put one of my brothers on bass and the other on drums so we'd have a band." The trio has been writing songs and recording and performing in some capacity as long as they can remember. They made their public debut when Lillian was 12, Eve was nine and Bosh was six.
Lillian is the band's lyricist. He says of his earliest forays into songwriting: "I had trouble learning how to read. The only way I could remember sentences was to sing them. I'd make up little songs so when I went to school to take a test I'd know the answers - I'd recite them in my head like a song."
Lillian describes Living Things' music as "anxious and ill-at-ease," saying their songs release "a lot of pent-up emotions." He offers this insight into his thematic preoccupations: "We are taught what to think instead of how to think. We're not told the truth; we're programmed to believe what someone else says is true. I write about the distorted view of America we have. We're told so many lies, with nothing to back them up. The powers that be try to keep everyone in fear so no one will challenge their agenda. I think it's time people stop being so naïve about what they're hearing on CNN and MSNBC. The basis of our band is to say, "Wake the fuck up and start asking questions. Don't keep your mouth shut."
Living Things have played throughout the St. Louis area, as well as in Columbia, Mo., Chicago, New York, Nashville and Los Angeles. The band was signed by DreamWorks A&R exec Beth Halper.
Living Things view their shows as communal gatherings. "We're called Living Things because we are all living things - we're us, but we're also you; we're everybody," Lillian posits. "When we play a show, it's not like we're this big band and we're onstage and you're not; we're all onstage."»
Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly
Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly, or Sam to his friends, has to be filed under one of BSM's best. Doing something a little bit different to a lot of people around right now, Sam mixes delicate guitar melodies with intelligent lyrics, electronic drum beats and any other noises he can get out of his laptop.
Hailing from Southend, possibly the most unlikely of all rock n roll launch pads, there is definitely a maturity well beyond his years, which is clear from the very first time you listen to one of his Postal Service crossed with Damien Rice-esque masterpieces.
Sam can often be found clutching his guitar and laptop computer on one of the countries many Mega Bus routes. Surely the most punk rock touring transport choice in the world?»

Opeth
- Mikael Åkerfeldt
- Peter Lindgren
- Martin Mendez
- Martin "Axe" Axenrot
- Per Wiberg
In a metal scene glutted with traditionalists and bandwagon jumpers, Opeth continue to create epic, iconoclastic music, inventing the rules as they go along. From the jazz-inflected rhythms and acoustic embellishments of their 1994 debut, Orchid, to the Middle Eastern flavors and stoner metal riffs of 2001's Blackwater Park, these Swedes continue to venture where others couldn't fathom and have returned with a treasure trove of songs for their new effort, Ghost Reveries, that makes most so-called sonic adventurists seem positively one-dimensional.

Satyricon
As is true for all musical genres, black metal has its share of clichés. Enter stage left: the devil himself, hailed by cacophonous guitar riffs, swathed in pompous keyboard orchestrations, a grotesque pandemonium of noise and blasphemous imagery, worshipped by hordes of black-clad youths trying their hardest to be different.
The theatrical horror of many black metal bands is easy to ridicule, but behind these superficial impressions lies something deeply disturbing, a menacing presence perfectly evoked by Norway's Satyricon on their aptly titled last album VOLCANO. Never a band to reiterate the obvious, the Oslo-based two-piece has made a remarkable career out of shaping the true core of one of the most uncompromising and extreme genres in musical history. Their aim has always been to explore the musical logic behind the darkest emotions, to add a defined aural structure to the metaphysical darkness of human existence.
