"Y'know," says The Broken Family Band frontman, and sometime solo artiste, Steve Adams "it was pointed out to me that if you removed the steps from downstairs this venue would resemble an ultimate fighting arena."
Despite being called 'The Shed', this is a gladitorial setting for the return of Cambridge's prodigal sons, greeted with a hero's welcome and a few interruptions from one punter who tries to heckle Adams every pronocument: "Look mate we're paying someone £200 to film this gig so we don't really want you to become the centre of attention." Indeed.
When not busy putting down nutters, Adams & BFB are on knockout form, rocking through three stand out tracks from new album 'Balls', with 'You're Like A Woman' chief among them. DiS has already trumpeted this track and live it crackles with caustic energy. In turn this is channelled into a thumping take on 'At The Back Of The Chapel', "The single that should have made us famous" claims Adams.
Fame may eldue them but their trademark mix of 'Anglicana' and songs about fighting, fucking, boozing and breakdowns (or as in the case of 'Where The Hell Is My Baby?', played tonight, all four) may just cement BFB's place as the UK's premier cult band. All this and critical acclaim from some unlikely sources, including the tabloid press: "We got five out of five in The Sun!" hollers Adams.
Indeed, tonight BFB turn in a five star performance. They ought to be as famous as the late 'n' great John Belushi who graces their song of the same name. Trouble is they'd have to be dead and that would be wrong. Tonight, however, BFB are very much alive and kicking.
