Syd Barrett’s face adorns the London Zodiac’s lifebelt hanging from this canteen ceiling. It's a nice touch name checking Cambridge’s lost soul, but sad too, given the fact that Mystery Jets have to point out who he is to a largely bemused audience.
His presence looms large: Eel Pie Island's sons' whimsical psychedelia owes a debt to Barrett-era Pink Floyd. The literal daddy of the Jets, Henry Harrison looks like he ought to be in the Floyd instead of supporting son Blaine who, as part time percussionist, utilizes both colander and upturned dustbin lid to great effect.
Utilizing these ‘instruments’ sums up Mystery Jets nicely: battered looking, endearingly ramshackle and capable of making a right old racket.
Let’s face it though, what we really want are tunes. This is where Mystery Jets misfire: sure ‘Alas Agnes’ is a winner but ‘You Can’t Fool Me Dennis’ sounds leaden-footed, and too much of the set meanders.
Mystery Jets are, thanks to their rough ‘n’ ready image and sound, that bit different but a New Year tour with Arctic Monkeys will be a tough test. Good luck lads.

hmm
I thoroughly enjoyed them live, but you're right about them supporting the Artic Monkeys - a very odd choice, and I think that a bunch of Scally AM fans aren't going to react too well to them.
Blaines dad is super though. He looks like hes having the most fun EVER when they play.
I beg to differ...
You Can't Fool Me Dennis is a perfect blurt of grin-spreadingly delightful pop hoppery. I bloody love it.
Seen the Jets twice on this tour and my cheeks ached after from smiling so much both times.
Arctic Monkeys make me wanna puke.
also
its the nme tour. its not one band "supporting" the other. and max=emo= park are headling/last on anyway.
oh but
there's clearly no lack of tunes. they were so good in london. dennis, leaden-footed?! majestic!
I have to
agree with gen. Seen them quite a few times pre signing to 679 and when I heard cant fool me dennis I quite dissapointed. Especially when you think about foot stompers like zoo time and (not sure if they even play it any more) soluble in air and annos italy. However (moving swiftly back to original point) their live show just keeps getting better and better, 'dennis' surprising me the most.
Mon the muh'fukin jets yo!
Joshi x
Oops
I should really make myself a little clearer.
Didnt like dennis on CD but agree with Gen that jets live (esp dennis) = good.
phew.
the
backlash to the backlash to the backlass already?
dennis CD
I know what you mean - but I wouldn't go so far as to say I didn't like the 679 Dennis.
Both the 679 Dennis & the newly released Agnes somehow lack the fire of the download (and live) versions.
I think the problem is that Blaine's kitchen sink percussion has been played down too much - but they are great songs in any case.
For me, much as I love Maximo Park, the Mystery Jets will be THE highlight of the NME tour - just have to make sure we get there early - loads of people missed Kaiser Chiefs last year!
I agree. When they supported the Futureheads there were about 5 of us enjoying them. Everyone else just seemed to be standing around, hands in pockets, looking bemused and slightly frightened.
it's
funny hearing them played in topshop. makes me smile.
