So often, it's easy for a singer/songwriter to play off a naturally shy nature and end up looking like everyone else who ever picked up an instrument and tried to play - lifeless, boring and seemingly talentless. However, we always have a selection of gems that keep a faith in the format alive, Elton John, Paul Weller and more recently Graham Coxon spring to mind - and Coxon is a perfect point of reference for tonight's show with Jeremy Warmsley.
Standing in what is without a doubt the most sauna-like venue DiS has ever experienced, we are presented by a sleight yet imposing figure of Mr. Warmsley and his cock-a-hoop collection of backing musicians, collectively known as The LMNOPs and this collective are the reason Jeremy shines. His carefully constructed melodies have seemed underwhelming on the previous occasions we have seen Warmsley solo, but with the sheer energy and almost chaotic accompaniments flanking him, a massive joyful life is given to these quite frankly brilliant songs.
Jeremy possesses a talent to effectively concoct the most hypnotic of pedal-bending guitar tones to form a carpet from which the most skyscraping, smile-inducing songs rise. Keyboards are played and then pounced upon - but it works. A bass rhythmically sets another scene for the band to cascade and then bassist Adam Beach whacks the hell out of it - but it works. It's a rare and valued thing when an individual can control his orchestra to reproduce his work in such irrepressibly buoyant fashion, but Jeremy Warmsley and his band infallibly produce the goods tonight.
The fact that he closes the night with the astounding 'World of Sound', featuring just an achingly well toned slide guitar and Jeremy's voice is just the icing on the cake.
