Sleater-Kinney

Edit this event

Sleater-Kinney have certainly progressed in sound and vision over the decade since the release of Call The Doctor, hitting highs with 1997’s Dig Me Out and 2002’s One Beat in particular. However, one can imagine that the temptation for them to piece together new from old, to stick the formula, to write another ‘Little Babies’ must be there somewhere in the backs of their minds. They’re ‘veterans’ and ‘pioneers’ of the Riot Grrrl scene, right? Well, right…but maybe if you tuned out for a while you should check in with them again.

There’s no fuss as they take to the stage at their ‘secret’ follow-up to their official London show at the ICA the previous night. (Tickets were, incidentally, advertised on the Barfly site as ‘Slutty-Kitty’.) They tinker with leads and tune up and then, with barely a howdy or hello, slam straight into ‘The Fox’, the opener on new LP The Woods. The tune is indescribably heavy - it’s like treacle tart. It’s like 10 million pounds of sludge from New York and New Jersey. It’s Zeppelin heavy. No matter that the song’s subject matter is almost a sing-songy nursery rhyme about a duck and a fox – the paint-stripping, fuzzed-out guitar tone builds to an immense chorus that finally provides a musical match for Corin Tucker’s powerful yell. Where there was once taut, tense interlacing guitars there is now a wall of fuzz and feedback. Carrie Brownstein wields her SG with evident glee, twisting and pogoing her way around the stage. The new songs are longer and slip into experimental, extemporaneous jams. That’s not to say, however, that S-K have lost their focus. The jams are searching and thoughtful – as the best of Sonic Youth’s or Television’s – and the payoff is always rewarding. The new songs are clearly familiar to the crowd and possible first single ‘Entertain’ is greeted like an old favourite.

The set is split almost evenly between the new material and carefully chosen older songs. They close with ‘Step Aside’ from One Beat – an S-K take on classic 60s girl group tracks, complete with doo wop backing vocals from Carrie and Janet. The Barfly crowd erupts with joy and down at the front, from nowhere, an umbrella pops up, bobbing and shaking to the beat. It’s a sad, funny, floppy old umbrella with struts that have lost almost all structural integrity and its appearance, so comical and spontaneous, puts a broad smile on Corin’s face. For a second. Then it’s back to serious business. Sleater-Kinney sound angry as hell. Rejoice.

Re: Sleater-Kinney

Ah, you're killing me!

Sleater-Kinney

Was at the ICA gig. Fucking fantastic, nothing like them out there at the moment.

Sleater-Kinney

Went to both gigs. the Barfly one was easily the best but they were both amazing. Can't wait till the 25th when the new albums out.

Best Band In The World

Sleater-Kinney

I was at this gig. It was intresting to see how the fan base has changed over the years. Its now mostly short 15 year old girls who are not angry at the establishment, but more worried about what the band is wearing. I think this could be the year sleater kinney does the commerail rounds (CD:UK, popworld, T4). Good luck to them. they deserve the success. The new stuff sounds great.

Re: Sleater-Kinney

Commercial rounds**

Kids....proof read your work

Sleater-Kinney

did no one notice the truckers at this gig???

or was it just cos my 5"1 self was stuck at the back faced with dandruff vision.
ggrreat.

did anyone see jon slades band - the legend play in support?
i missed it - i thought id abuse the guest list and turn up late. duh.
(it was embarrassing when he came up to say hello and i didnt know why he was there...)
what were they like?

Sleater-Kinney

I loved "one more hour" back in the day and then sleater-kinney kind of slipped off my radar. Could anyone give me a quick highlights of the back catalogue to check out?

Re: Sleater-Kinney

I recommend the "All Hands On The Bad One" LP. It's really great.

Re: Sleater-Kinney

I don't really have an opinion on Sleater-Kinney's music, but Carrie is a very handsome woman. If I was an irresistably attractive lesbian, she'd be mine.

Re: Sleater-Kinney

Many thanks for the heads up, will check it out.

Re: Sleater-Kinney

The legend!.........wow.......watching the lengend! has to b one of teh most painfull experiences ive ever encountered. for the first 5 minutes i thought a drun man had wondered onto the stage. im sure that this band is considered cool by....some1, but not for me thank you.

Re: Sleater-Kinney

dunno ive not heard their stuff.
yeah probably was a drunk man. of the legendary kind.
thats what legends do i guess. cos theyre allowed.

its such a shame i was stuck at the back for this gig - yet managed to cobble together a review for a rival website ehem cough cough... ive always wanted to see sleater kinney... ever since they decided to have a gig a couple of years ago the night before my a level results (yeah didnt want to tempt fate the night before thank you...)
as it stands i have still yet to SEE sleater-kinney...

Re: Sleater-Kinney

Its Everett Trues band and they are shit. Best keep it at shit because otherwise I'll rant for ages.

Anyway I'd seen them before so knew to stay in the pub. If you ever see hoim on the bottom of the bill I suggest you do the same.

Re: Sleater-Kinney

gggreat so my plan to turn up uber later didnt backfire after all

dandyboots.

Re: Sleater-Kinney

Emm... with one or two notable exceptions
1. They're an all girl group
2. They're not from Manchester
3. They can play instruments
4. They dont rip off the beatles
5. They can play more than 3 chords

If you'd said they sound like a mix of Patti Smith/Go-Go's/Pretenders... then I might have agreed, but you didnt so I dont!

Oh and I forgot... They're good!

Re: Sleater-Kinney

Loved 'one more hour' 2... had the old 7" (now thats going back to the olden days). Must say 'hot rocks' was the highlight for me - 'start together' def the standout track! Closely followed by 'burn dont freeze'. Genius. Well that's my twopence worth matey!

i think

he was joking.
A+ for effort though..
