Missy Elliott

Edit this event

It's a rare occasion that we see one of hip-hop's biggest stars on Brittish shores which is probably why expectations are so astronomically high for Missy Elliot tonight at the Brixton Academy. Indeed, it is her first show on this side of the Atlantic for just over four years and the audience crammed inside the venue are fanatical to say the very least. But after two hours of waiting with only Brittish wannabe Shariis to entertain us the stakes are well and truly raised for when the larger than life superstar hits the stage.

Now, it's not that Missy is bad tonight by any stretch of the imagination. It's just that when she opens with a raucios 'She's a Bitch followed up straight by fellow single 'All in My Grill you begin to smell the proverbial rat. To open with two of your biggest hits is something virtually unheard of, but when it's followed by the breakthrough smash 'Supa Dupa Fly (Da rain), tonight dedicated to all the old skool Missy Elliot fans, you wonder what she's saving for the middle and end of the show. And the answer is simple.....chat,chat,chat,chat. Indeed we get every single Missy has ever released, 'Get Ur Freak On' sounding never better in particular, plus two tracks from new album 'Missy E.....So Addictive' but for the rest of the two hours she's on stage it's just talking. Sure enough there was the mildly amusing Missy Elluiot Talen contest but when the majority of the crowd have paid inexcess of £20 for a ticket, you want a bit more than just seeing a few audience members make complete tits of themself. Missy even proceeds to walk through the crowd for all of twenty minutes saying not much in particular. It's just a complete waste of both time and money!

The verdict of tonights performance is a simple one, when banging out the hits, Missy (Flanked by the rare occurance of an entire backing band) is unstoppable. To hear and see tracks like 'Lick Shots' is an amazing sight. But when you've paid twenty quid to see Missy Elliot play 8 songs and be backed by the promise of big name friends (consisting of one lil' Mo someone we will probably never ever see again) you leave the venue feeling empty, ripped-off and wondering if you actually saw her play any songs. Shame really.

Missy Misdemeanor Elliott - London Brixton Academy

Maybe the bad show was a punishment for those stupid enough to be willing to pay money to watch that useless shit on stage ??

Missy Misdemeanor Elliott - London Brixton Academy

Hmmm, this totally smacks of: "I should like hip hop, but I don't really, but I'll pretend I do to make it look like I love loads of different things. And Missy will be my favourite artist, because she has been on the cover of the NME, so it's ok for alternative hipsters like me to place her album between Queens Of The Stone Age and At the drive in. Wow I'm cool."

Convince me I'm wrong, but hey.

Re: Missy Misdemeanor Elliott - London Brixton Academy

no, face it mate. you're right and so many people are guilty of it.
Especially Sean with his "Aren't Destiny's Child fantastic ?" rhetoric

Re: Missy Misdemeanor Elliott - London Brixton Academy

Fuck off. I've adored destiny's child in one way or another for years. Sorry if that makes me a cliché, but it's the truth. Why lie?

Now go press me some trousers or make me some toy cars :op

Re: Missy Misdemeanor Elliott - London Brixton Academy

Gotta agree with luke there actually. If you're going for the 'i'm an indie kid but I like hip-hop too, honest' type hipster thing then at least go for the decent underground-ish or experimental hip-hop.

Actually knowing sean slightly better than you i may be prepared to give him the benifit of the doubt on this occasion. The point still remains for those who think liking some token pop band will make them more eclectic and cool. i'm probably guilty of it myself at some point actually... although i cant think of any examples at the moment thank god

Re: Missy Misdemeanor Elliott - London Brixton Academy

prefuse 73... thats my hip hop(/electronic) tip

That's twice as snobbish and downright narrow minded than jumping to the conclusion that if you like hip hop it MUST be because it is on the cover of the NME. True, some people are very happy listening to one genre of music, there is plenty to listen to in indie and rock alone. However others do sincerely enjoy listening to other genres of music, including the cheesy bits...or by artists that you don't rate because they aren't cool enough for you or don't fit in with your tastes.

Re: Missy Misdemeanor Elliott - London Brixton Academy

Just to add to what James added, if you want 'underground' hip-hoppy stuff try Marz, unique sound.

Re: Missy Misdemeanor Elliott - London Brixton Academy

oops... it wasn't sean... sorry rachelle, no idea why i wrote that. ignore me

Re: Missy Misdemeanor Elliott

hmm... yeah sorry i kinda replied to that on the message board without having read the article... plus i thought it was sean for some reason... *slaps wrist*

still it does annoy me when people like the NME pick out some 'pop/hip-hop/r&b band that it's now officially ok/cool to like' of the month or something. i'm not accusing you of that i'm just saying. and for the record i like some hip hop although i dont claim to know much about it. currently getting mp3s of the arsonists...heh

Re: Missy Misdemeanor Elliott - London Brixton Academy

no, don't do that. thats a wack word that the americans made up to descrive stuff like chemical brothers and stuff like that.

Re: Missy Misdemeanor Elliott

it's also a pain when the NME put missy on the cover and claim to have been down with hip hop for years...bullshit.

Re: Missy Misdemeanor Elliott - London Brixton Academy

since when have you liked destinys child? wasn't it you who smirked at chris houghton and called him "ironic" because he claimed he liked destinys child? i seem to remember you catching on about a year later, saying you liked them which seemed to me like you were just saying that to hope CH would change his opinion if he found out that you did like them. do you actually have any DC record? and if you do, can you honestly stand up and say that you spent your money wisely and enjoy listening to these records?

don't get me wrong here, i'm not saying it isn't possible for anyone to like bands like these, I'm just saying under the circumstances it just seems fucked.

Re: Missy Misdemeanor Elliott - London Brixton Academy

I think you'll find I was saying that about Chris a) to wind him up and b) to spark a math-rock riot on nopassingphase. Also cus Chris was quite extreme with his love for them and I wasn't excpecting it.

I do have the first two albums, yes, the first isn't as good as the last, which always gets me in the mood for goin out or wakes me up. Just something about them, which makes pop feel alive. Praps blame growing up on James Brown and Wacko, I dunno.

I do enjoy and have enjoyed destiny's child for a looong while.

I'm still bigger than hip-hop!!!!

Right, my defence.... I adore hip-hop, it's the most exciting lyrically mind inducing style around at the moment. Any of it which is influenced by beat poetry if my favourite, things like Disposable Heroes of Hiphopcrisy, Mos Def, Jill Scott [read my review] and Saul Williams (can't wait for the gig in June with Tricky!!). Then there's the more PE site of things that I like, like Dead Prez, Dilated Peoples, De La Soul....not even got out of the D's. Plus I really like the more electic (hate that word!) side of hip-hop like The Infesticons, Tha Alkoholics, Handsome Boy Modelling School.......
......I could go on naming bands til the break of dawn (which ain't too long) but do names proove I know the difference between tha sounds of the big bad city and the east coast? Does it mean I'm down wiv da kidz? NO! Names mean naff all. I wouldn't ever claim to be an expert in hip-hop, I just know what I like.

You can all disregard me as a fashion conformer or slag me off for being sickly opinated, but did any of you know about my hip-rippin djing? Well, actually a few of the people who know me who are laying into me do know I do that and how excited I get about funky music. Maybe it's easier to choose to forget and join in the negativity?

I don't want to be tied to one style, I'd hate it if I was in the mood for a certain type of music and all I had was the same old similar records to put on.

Have I defended myself yet?

*puts on The People Under the Stairs LP and wanders off to bed*

STILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Damn, made a few typo's in the above. I'm sure you're clever enough to spot them. Too many redbulls and lollies. Eating chubba chups in a ratm club mosh is very recommended. shame about the shifting of other peoples body fluids meaning you can't take it outta yer mouth.
