The Miss High 5s are all about hooks. The sort of hooks that ingrain themselves into the minds of those present (which, criminally is no more than 50), leaving wide smiles on everyone's faces.
The fourpiece excel in the art of perfectly-formed melodic pop-rock, but holding an edge that to maintain more than passing interest. Kicking off with the opener from their recent mini-album, ‘NOW MH5’, we’re told to ‘keep our fingers on the pulse of the modern music’. Which is an apt enough demand, given that we're sorely lacking bands who have this grasp of melody and furthermore, are not afraid to put it into practice.
There’s obvious comparisons to be drawn; Ben Kweller, David Bowie and early Blur being amongst the easiest. However, the MH5s have honed their own driving rhythms, coupling them with technical abilities and an unbelievable knack at writing a stellar chorus. With stand-out songs and obvious future singles such as ‘Roll On Tomorrow’ and ‘No Service’ sticking in your head for days after, it’s impossible to see them staying penniless for long and the spattering of A&R here tonight would imply the same.
It won’t be long until spring returns and we all grow thirsty for those verses that send us on to the dancefloor at our indie discos. Embrace next summer now.
