Capricorns

Edit this event

Every few months Camden's premier dungeon becomes something of a second home to me. Last week I was shaking my rump to Q And Not U, and tonight I find myself back again, only this time it's not my rump that's shaking... it's everything.

Capricorns could topple tall buildings from afar, if the inclination took them. All it'd take would be a brief barrage of their quasi-stoner noise and that'd be that, bye bye baby. What's that on top of the rubble? The 15th floor. Holed up below Camden's miserable main thoroughfare though, the quartet display a modicum of control - after all, it'd hardly benefit themselves to bring the ceiling in (nor would the punters upstairs in the pub take too kindly to it) - but still wreak havoc with our hearing. A brief vocal contribution from a man whose name I fail to remember (but who possesses a voice completely alien to conventional singers - it's like the Predator, or_ something) points the way towards an Isis-style future, and if every show these Londoners play is akin to this one, who'd bet against them bettering the champions of controlled volume? Not I, that's for sure. What they _must do is get some recorded material out, and pronto.

Jesu fill the middle slot on the bill, but judging by the crowded bar area, they're hardly the band du jour. That'll be instrumental metal-machines Pelican, a band who don't so much swallow you whole as their goofy looking bird namesake would, but pummel you into little tiny pieces with a relentless and ever-growing wall of bass-heavy noise. Complaints flicker around the crowd - "It's not loud enough!" "Turn it up!" - but from where I'm standing (under one of those painful UV lighting strips) it's just fine. Feeling somewhat reserved (and not a little exposed under such lighting), I try to fight the urge to nod my head slowly and rhythmically, but fail miserably. There's just no ignoring this outfit, they're that good. Conversation is impossible. The music gatecrashes your senses like a Trojan Horse, striking from behind fortifications that you'd previously figured would hold. On paper they're ordinary, admittedly, but in the flesh they're mesmerising, weaving intricate guitar passages to bombastic drums that sound like a battering ram on the doors of Jurassic Park. Casting them aside as just another loud rock act without the guts to sing is ridiculous - Pelican are masters of their art, and their art is noise. Ceiling intact, it's a job well done come closing time, a last bell we can't hear due to the intense ringing in our ears. Not loud enough? You guys are suckers for punishment.

i KNEW there was something i meant to do last night.
DAMN

Pelican

The name of the predator voice of Capricorns guitarist is Nathan (Bennett I think is his surname)..nice guy..they all are. As for the guest vocalist..recognised him but don't know his name. A cool set from them although Dean was having a few probs with the bass but that didn't stop them from rocking! Pelican sounded almost twice as loud and like a fucking incredible wall of noise. You knew it was gonna be loud when the whole bands wearing plugs! I still had ringing when I got home and I was wearing some too!
When the music's that good who needs vocals.
A great night..I was at the bar for Jesu too but apparently the drum machine wasn't really kickin it..Capricorns & Pelican went pretty well together..two of my favourites anyhow..Yeah can't wait til Capricorns put something out, soon I hope!

Re: Pelican

Oh aye, I know it was Nathan throating his way through the end of the last song, but the other guy's name slips my mind (I've been told before).

They're a great band and I too am well looking forward to some recorded material... I was told they'd be putting out a 7" on Rise Above... anyone?

Re: Pelican

I prefered their purely instrumental stuff, the singing didn't work for me

Re: Pelican

Pelican were absolutely fucking awe-inspiring. The three new songs they played all sounded brilliant, they're drummer's double bass pedal sounded like a thunder storm and the guitars were like a a whole fucking weather system deciding to off-load its contents in a confined space. With the pretentious crap safely out of the way, I thought Capricorns were shite (especially the song with the vocals....I could imagine that guy fronting Hatebreed and telling the crowd to "throwdown" and "represent"); they seemed to have one idea which they then repeated in every song. Jesu were also (marginally less) shite. The guy needs to learn that no matter how much delay he puts on his vocals, everyone can still hear that he CAN'T FUCKING SING! The bass was far too prominent (granted, that may not strictly be the band's fault) and, to be honest, playing three chords in B over a horribly weak electronic drum beat for ten minutes isn't my idea of good music. Some of the electronica was pretty cool and gave the songs a modicum of personality but he seemed to rely on that as he didn't know what to do with his guitar. My advice to Jesu would be:
1. Learn how to write a decent guitar line
2. Don't even bother with vocals...when they're that shit they bring the whole song down
3. Get a fucking drummer

Pelican

Pelican blew the roof off... I was on the front row marvelling at the skill (and the pedal set up) of the band, and the volume was such that by halfway through each song I was feeling nauseous and dizzy. Awe inspiring, particularly the sublime NightEndDay halfway through, and the new songs sounded promising.

Jesu have potential, their recorded output is interesting and spooky, but live the show was somewhat lacklustre, not helped by the various technical problems experienced. Nonetheless, I expected better from Justin Broadrick, being the mastermind behind Godflesh. We'll have to wait and see on that one.

Capricorns also, bruising and enjoyable, but haven't yet realised the potential they have. At the moment it sounds like a cross between Kyuss and Isis, notable especially in the deep bass grooves the band created. I reckon their recorded output should be enjoyable though, and I did enjoy Nathan's vocals better than the ^^ 'Hatebreed-esque' vocals of the other guy.

A wicked evening though, my ears were ringing a full day afterwards. I was seriously worried for my hearing.

I was at this gig at had read some of your comments here a few weeks ago.. This time I thought I'd sign up so I could respond....
In my opinion, jesu (despite the technical diffficulties) were unbelievably good.... The way justin can make the guitar sound like that... Hypnotic, crushing, heavy.... like nothing else around and without equals.... A league above the other bands playing that night.... although pelican are quite good (I have one of their albums) I find them a but boring at times and to be honest I left midway through their set, but yeah. they're okay... Capricorns???? is that what they're called.... boring toilet music... "a cross between isis and kyuss???" don't make me laugh... That guy hitting himself in the head...what a loser.. i hated them, pure and simple, avoid them like the plague.... I think some of the people here need some basic musical education.. pick up some old swans and godflesh records and see what good heavy music is...
