Tonight The Libertines – minus Pete - played a gig at the tiny Infinity nightclub at some godawful early hour of the morning. Gosh! OK, so it’s not the first time this has happened, but it makes this DiSser happy and smiley indeed. The alcohol consumption during the day made DiS happy and smiley too. We were truly wankered, dear fellows. But booze or not, this was still bloody ace, innit.
Har Mar Superstar comes onstage and sings Don’t Look Back Into The Sun with them. He keeps his clothes on. It was unexpected (him keeping his clothes on, that is) and godlike. It was a bit of a “did that really just happen?” type of moment. “Is this a fuckin' party or WHAT?” he barks. Why yes. Yes it is. Once in a while the Libs can pull something like this out of the bag. The loss of Pete has lost them a sense of danger and chaos. The chaos returned in fine form tonight, not just in the guest vocal stakes (Tim Burgess made an appearance too, bizarrely) but because it was a sloppy, punky mess, a band playing for the love of it with screaming, singing-along fans. It was A Moment.
The Libertines are clearly most at home in the small, sweaty venues. Maybe there is still hope after all.
Can I go to bed now? Thanks.
