The Holiday Plan and Septembre

Edit this event

I’m trying to imagine how a band like Septembre forms. Wrestler grows dreads and decides to wallop drums really hard instead of other people, meets bloke from Easyworld’s gothic older brother for vocal work and finds bassist reaching for the same Tool hook at Riffs ‘R’ Us. The singer’s eyeliner-framed glance pierces the room, before another mammoth bass-heavy, drumskin-destroying post-grunge interlude grinds it way across the floor and vibrates up your trouser leg towards your ribcage. This lot seem to mean business, folks.

The Holiday Plan, meanwhile, scream emo, quite literally. Broken guitar chords for introductions? Check. Greasy locks swept forward over face? Check. Waist of short trousers dangling somewhere around the lower thigh? Check. The odd ‘discrete’ facial piercing? Check. A bit more screaming? Make that triple check. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, particularly if you’ve recently had your heart sawn in half by someone with greasy locks swept over face etc., but if you’re in search of revolution then stick to the free paper aeroplanes (now they are cool, are they not?)

Then there’s Reuben of course, the three-headed pop-punk (but not like that) beast that seems to be getting angrier by each single. Once was a time when they seemed so timid, cowering from the Old Bill for being too violent and so on, and now they’re foaming at the mouth about the head honcho of cheesy horror flicks. What’s going on? And frankly, does it matter when the tunes actually, somehow, get better? Book-ending the set with songs already at semi-hit status, this does mean that tracks from forthcoming long-player ‘Racecar Is Racecar Backwards’ don’t appear as riotously anthemic as others. But seeing as ‘Freddie Kreuger’ is their boldest, catchiest, shoutiest, quite possibly best single to date then maybe we should give ‘em a few months to seep into our psyche and allow, say, ‘Stuck In My Throat’ or ‘Let’s Stop Hanging Out’ to continue doing the job. Evidently one aimed at the ‘old-school’ tonight as they go as further back in time than ‘Wooden Boy’ and ‘Dolphin’ and play B-side ‘Eating Only Apples’ as if it’s about to douse the planet in confusion. Don’t fret if you’re a new convert, though, because the group have that quiet/loud tactic transformed to a loud/loud one for effect, and will convincingly become your new favourite grunge-pop urchins every time they drop a song like a hot potato. Go get sweaty, kids.

Reuben

have to disagree
as much as i still enjoy the bands shows
i feel their singles have pretty much gotten weaker and weaker
freddy kreuger (damn me for being in the video) barely even stands up to, say stux

still
high hopes for the album

Reuben

well not progressively better, it's just i think that freddy is better than scared of the police which is beter than stuck in my throat, or something, i should go get some sleep.

have you still got the moustache?

Reuben

went to the gig and i've got to agree, the Holiday plan were possibly the only low point - Septembre were pretty damn ace -in fact i was chatting the 'wrestler type' drummer after their set and he's a fucking good guy -
Reuben however, in my humble opinion, just seem to be getting better and better - i've already laid my mits on a copy of the new album and trust me, it sounds better on CD than it does live - also, has anyone heard one of the B-sides for Freddie?- I think it's called Once or summit like that - Jamie sounds scarily like Paul Weller - but in a good way.

Reuben

its 'doll fin' not 'dolphin'! ;)

Re: Reuben

nah
fell off in the pit
had to put my hanf across my face for the end
just saw the vid today
in it for approx .3 seconds

Re: Reuben

yeah, i realise that it's 'Doll Fin' now some other people have told me, i've just never seen it written down before so put two and two together. And got five.
(and apparently you spell it FreddY not FreddIE).

now i've confused myself, though. Is FK better than Scared Of The Police? both have been rotating in me head today and i can't really decide either way. so i'll say that FK is MORE ACCESSIBLE than SOTP...or more pop...argh...dunno...

Reuben

Reuben rock it live everytime, but gotta disagree with moosman about the Holiday Plan...they rule. They get a beating around these boards from time to time for their emo-ness but I just reckon that because they're dead young. they got a whole lot more to offer. get their first EP, listen to 'Every Days Winter' on it then cast judgement. it's awesome. looking forward to seeing em again at Download and Reading/Leeds. I hear they're playing both.

Re: Reuben

You would say that, being their manager an' all. :-P

Re: Reuben

actually, i saw the Holiday plan a few times live and they were miles better than the Joiners gig - even legends have off days.

Reuben

'scared' is much better than FK, as is SIMT. in fact, freddy is probably one of my least favourite =reuben= songs....don't tell 'em i said that though! :s

and good review anyway. the dolphin confusion doesnt really matter. i'll let it go...

Re: Reuben

they played 'Wooden Boy' too, um, woodenboy...

Re: Reuben

reuben are always special, but I much prefer the old quirkier stuff ie woodenboy, Shambles, to the new stuff.
Anyway, the album should still be ace.

Re: Reuben

Oh it will be - i've laid my paws on a sampler and there's one tune called 'moving to black waters' which is really, really stunning - it's a bit quieter than usual, and kinda has the vibe of 'Everlong' by the Foos. Top drawer stuff.

Re: Reuben

I think it's actually called "Moving To Blackwater", with Blackwater being a small town a few miles away from Camberley, where Reuben are based. I've got some album demos and I'm fairly sure that's the title. I do like the idea of "Moving To Black Waters" though, very poetic. Great song either way.

Re: Reuben

yeah - through the dust and mess of my room i guess i screwed that up - thanks for the catch.

Re: Reuben

mmmm... actually, the title i've got is indeed 'Moving to Black Waters' whether this is a typo (they've somehow left off the title of track six - chorus is something like 'the stars have gone out') or not, i really can't tell - guess we've got to wait for the release proper

Re: Reuben

Is the long version of Shambles gonna be on the album? Oh my, it just has to be! hehe..

Re: Reuben

Pass - all i know so far is
'No one wins the war'
'Freddy Kreuger'
'Stuck in my throat'
'Missing Fingers'
'Moving to Black Waters/ Blackwater'
'Fall of the Bastille'
and t'other one i mentioned

Re: Reuben

There is a long version? Aaaaah what brilliance!

Re: Reuben

They played the short version last night...but a long version would be reub-tastic

Reuben

I was at this gig too...

septembre were intense as fuck... better than vex red in my humble opinion because they made me feel stuff, which is what music is all about.

the holiday plan WERE shite no matter what any one says. if he's not careful, the lead singer guy will ruin his voice *tuts*

and yeah Reuben were on form. good to see the classics out in full, espically miffy. not their best gig ever, but a damn fine performance.

i liked the atmosphere of the gig. well worth missing the boat for. :)
