The kind of immense stupidity shown at Wembley Arena would normally be enough to have me turning tail and heading home without even watching a band. Not being allowed water inside a rock gig and bag searches every ten yards or so really does take the piss. Then again, no other band is worth it quite like the Deftones.

First, A Perfect Circle entertain with a short but effective set, marred only by a complete lack of stage presence. Maynard (James Keenan, like you don?t already know) spends half an hour with his back to the crowd, convulsing like John Hurt in Alien. Sure, he can belt out a note or two, but the lack of interaction is disappointing. The music, thankfully, isn't. 'Magdalena' is enormous, nay, HUGE, threatening to lift the roof right off and propel it northwards up the M1. The new material is equally as impressive, and in new single, 'Weak and Powerless', they may have something that could trouble the Top 40. Sadly, the band's cold shoulder treatment stops me falling in love with A Perfect Circle, besides, how can I love another when my heart belongs to the band up next?

There are rock bands, and then there's the untouchable Deftones. Forget slanderous nu-metal accusations, Deftones are way beyond that, as White Pony proved oh so well. They kick things off with 'Minerva', the turning point from the band's Brixton show in June, where it transformed what was a limp performance into something considerably more powerful. Tonight it's released early to skirmish with the crowd and taking the bait, the pit raucously ensues, ravishing upon 'Be Quiet And Drive' and 'My Own Summer' which are also unleashed within the first four songs.

Chino Moreno's waistband creeps closer to his knees with each and every song, but he's got other things to worry about when, during 'Bored', he slips from his perch on a ramp of sorts at the front of the stage, and crunches into the ground. Recalling Damon Albarn's fall at Reading, it's not the best way to answer questions of why he's always drunk on-stage.

Abe Cunningham's rapid-fire drumming drives songs like 'Feiticeira', 'Around The Fur' and 'Hexagram' through the heads of all in attendance with the recoil of a sawn-off, but not even he can save the usually ferocious 'Head Up', which is marred by the presence of a kid on stage, screeching along annoying far more than it entertains. This isn't a Green Day gig, after all. Still, this is a show, and we're treated to a little blast of Weezer's 'Tired of Sex' during '7 Words' (ruining the song, incidentally), and Chino even plays up to the alcoholic jibes by downing what looks like a considerably-sized serving of JD and Coke between songs. He raises the glass in salute to the crowd, and asks us to join him in a drink. Of course, with drinks banned from the auditorium, sadly we cannot raise any back.

Kids and cover-versions aside, the Deftones do know how to please, amd the only thing missing is 'Passenger', odd considering Maynard's presence backstage. Their debut, 'Adrenaline', may be eight years old now, but the Deftones have never sounded so vital. Forget dumb-ass 'nu' metal and revel in the sound of how it should be done.

Deftones + A Perfect Circle - London Wembley Arena

they played tired of sex cos i asked them to
NO JOKE
i thought it was pretty cool, especially the 10 minutes of disruptive arguin that it caused

oh, and apc werent "first" up or on or whathaveyou. there was a tedious band called revolution smile or something. they played a the music cover, such was there shiteness

Re: Deftones + A Perfect Circle - London Wembley Arena

I know APC weren't the first band, I was implying that they played before Deftones, that's all.
I totally missed Revolution Smile. Exactly how shite were they then?

Re: Deftones + A Perfect Circle - London Wembley A

you could do a lot worse, but imagine puddle of mudd if they heard a tool track once, and decided to take themselves seriously as a result

and they like the music

Re: Deftones + A Perfect Circle - London Wembley A

eeek. they sound, erm, great? guess I'm glad I got screwed at Kings Cross and got in late!

OI! lol

"but not even he can save the usually ferocious 'Head Up', which is marred by the presence of a kid on stage, screeching along annoying far more than it entertains"

that was me you bastard! hahaha dont worry im not bothered, it improved my life if nothing else.

Re: OI! lol

Well if it's any concellation I thought it was cool. To be picked out of however many thousand people is gonna be amazing for whoever it is, which happens to be you, so fair play, chap.

The guy who got away with chino's guitar at the end tho - that's another story! A friend has exactly the same les paul, same colour - everything. No-one's gonna know whether that kid's guitar is actually chino's or not - it's not like it's signed or anything!

Re: OI! lol

Didn't mean to dis' Jack, just never thought it would be something the Deftones would do. That said, if it were me he'd picked, I'd have fucking loved it!

Next time, like my dad would say, put your back into it son!

Re: OI! lol

Yeah to be fair i was shitting my pants so i probably didnt make a very good job of it the gigs still a bit of an amazed daze to me so i dont really remember what i did just seeing all these faces looking at me, taking a gulp then screaming, as for the guitar, you'd know so it would stil be special to you personally even if people didnt believe you.

...A perfect night!

Agreed that The revolution smile were awful but it's not their live presence but their lack of charisma in their songs that make them a rubbish band. Still, A Perfect circle had me and my girlfriend gob-smacked as it was the first time we'd heard any of their stuff. We were saying to each other: "Damn, those guys are good!" though I still don't get why Keenan didn't turn around. Maybe he's a little shy.
Anyway, teh Defyones were great that night and Chino had me in stitches with the 'Terminator' jokes and constant references to Dr. Dre's birthday. Deftones rule! Despite being drunk they did a bloody good job of entertaining Wembley arena that night. As for Jack, fair play dude, I thought you did well. I spent the rest of the night envying you wishing it was me who got called up there (even though I got skanked withs seated tickets so I wouldn't have been able)

Re: ...A perfect night!

The T2 jokes were pretty funny actually. It's Chino's interaction with the crowd that makes the Deftones different from other live acts. They are special like that because they have a way of making fans feel like they actually matter and they spread a lot of love around. A Perfect circle just stood there and played but Chino actually took the time to talk to the audience between songs. The most touching part of the whole performance was when he thanked a girl for going to every one of his tour dates. That probably made her whole night and goes to shows that not all rockstars are wa**ers and can actually be quite thoughtful. Rock on!

Deftones

Tis a late addition to this post but i also sang... well shouted wit chino durin the gig wen he came down to the barrier for my own summer. he kept throwin down the mike to me for every 'shove it' part an i replied!! altho i did nearly lose sum teeth the first time!! :s Also i dunno whether to feel envious or sorry 4 the guy infront of me who chino clamped his thighs around his head an musta bin starin at his crotch the whole time! Still envy u jack.... u lucky b.... was amazin gig tho!!

Deftones

What do you mean (to alc)? Puddle of Mudd do take themselves seriously.

Re: Deftones

I didn't think The Revolution smile were THAT bad. They were a bot corny but cut them some slack, okay?

Deftones

i never saw the rev smile at these gigs so i can't comment on their performance but geez they really are an amazing band. whoever said they sound like puddle of mudd must of seen the wrong band.

the new materail they are doing is quite exciting, check out the link to the new demos and i'm sure you start to love em..
