The Underworld in Camden is sold out. Groups of people are audibly venting their frustration outside, visibly upset at the prospect of missing out on one of the most talked about bands in extreme, aggressive music making their first appearance in the UK in over three years. Make your way down the stairs however, squeezing past the herd of backpacks at the merch table and huddled around the balcony and packed in like burly, tattooed sardines are hundreds of hardcore metal devotees all too ready to go completely mental to the frenzied grindcore blitzkrieg that is the Converge experience. I have to admit I had a few goosebumps myself.

But first, Leeds very own dirty rock and roll messiahs John Holmes are here to get us all loud and larey for their performance. Boasting an incredibly beefy sound and drawing references to the Dukes of Nothing and Motorhead the intimidating presence of the tattooed & beardy Holmes crew seemed to be exactly the kind of thing the bloodthirsty pit of psyched up metallers wanted to hear. Although their rebel-rousing cover of Ash’s ‘Burn Baby Burn’ may not have.

As soon as they finish their set and the room’s small and sweaty confines become even more stuffed with every imaginable nook and cranny crammed with people, the air of anticipation weighing heavily in the hot and smoky atmosphere could be cut with a knife.

Before long the four members of Converge march into the stage, plug in their instruments and with a brief “hello, we’re Converge from Boston Massachusetts”, they launch into the grindcore blitz that is ‘Concubine’ and the whole building erupts into a storm of bodies thrashing their arms, heads and whole bodies around to the band’s mesmerising and altogether cathartic noise-core attack.

Onstage though the furiously wild and chaotic aggression is getting scary. Without pause for breath they leap into the second track off last year’s universally acclaimed ‘Jane Doe’ album, ‘Fault & Fracture’ it’s feral intensity reverberating throughout Camden and the surrounding boroughs. New song ‘You Fail Me’ off their forthcoming album displays some deeply savage riffwork before the dizzying blur of scalic madness that opens up 'When Forever Comes Crashing', both guitarist Kurt and bassist Nate flailing their instruments around their head & crowdsurfing while executing it’s frankly stupefying riffwork with staggering precision.

Ending their set with the constant head-butting of 'The Saddest Day' everything just goes utterly insane. Drums are getting smashed and kicked over, both guitarist’s are crowdsurfing and if vocalist Jacob isn’t being battered by the windmilling and kung-fu acrobatics in the pit he’s slamming from one side of the stage to the other evidently under the belief that for the 45 minutes they have onstage the band is completely invincible!

Some of you reading this may find Armageddon to be a more enticing proposition to tonight’s activities. To those present they’ve just been shown the exact reason why they got into extreme hardcore metal in the first place.

Re: Converge + John Holmes - London Camden Underworld

Damn you all, I missed them. They're one of the best bands to spin kick/windmill to in the world.

Converge + John Holmes - London Camden Underworld

by the way, the song "burn baby burn" by john holmes wasn't an ash cover, as they actually said before they played it.

i thought converge were a bit disapointing. love their records, but live they were quite loose and there was nothing much else to seperate them from the thousands of other dull hadcore bands which throw the mic into crowd for people to sing into.

this gig was pretty mixed i thought. The support bands got steadily worse, with Eden Maine being good but slightly what youd expect from a metalcore band, Paint the town Red beign average and John Holmes being pretty rubbish.

Converge themselve were a great experience, even though i didnt know many of the songs too well. the only downfall with them was that they didnt play long enough, which made me think why didnt they just chuck one of the crapsupport bands off if they really had to make the deadline. Also, i got kicked in the groin mid set which obviously sucks a bit and stopped me from jumping around as much.

so there are my thoughts.

Re: Converge + John Holmes - London Camden Underworld

Yeah, I have to say John Holmes were pretty patchy myself (despite calling them messiahs). They were quite messy in parts but overall got me in the mood for Converge.

Converge however, I knew every 'song' by so I guess it was more enjoyable for me. They didn't play long enough because of the curfew but as far as I know they did start at about 9.50, so that would make a good 45 min set.

I've also been looking forward to this gig for the past year so that made it that bit more special too.
