If there was ever a title for 'most apt band name then Kamikaze. Some bands claim to be in your face, but few go to the extremes of the Nottingham six piece, with all three vocalists darting around the venue, thrown into fits of rage by the thunderous doom metal eminating from the stage. Thankfully the band also has the material to back up their presence, and their criminally short set is a thrilling and enthralling sign of things to come.
A tough act to follow, but a task that Like A Kind of Matador take by the horns. From the heavily distorted riff of the opening track to the haunting melody of the closer ...Matador's bleak drones hit all the marks that Jesu and Pelican have failed to reach in recent releases.
And then on comes DJ Scotch Egg. Most people stand bewildered, perhaps due to the fact he was added to the gig four hours before doors opened and only 5-6 people knew he was about to play, as a single man armed only with gameboys and pedals wreaks havoc on the venue. Some people at the front break into dance spontaneously, others look like they have witnessed a UFO landing. "Louder?" Scotch asks after the second track. "Louder...Faster!" an audience member responds. He willingly obligues and the short set ends as it began; amidst a sea of confusion and amazement.
And how do you top a near perfect gig showcasing three of the most originative artists in our fair country? You add a band like Norways Noxagt, who somehow manage to top all that has proceeded them. It takes a couple tracks to get into the set, which is for the most part improvised, but by the third track, an infinitely more brutal working of 'The Hebbex', the band find their feet and reach a level of intensity and psuedo-cohesion that very few can manage. Again like the previous three bands the set is let down by its briefness but its a minor criticism. On any other day and at any other venue the night could have been shambolic, but tonight in the perfect setting the british contingent and a trio of norse warriors have shown that all is well in the world of truly alternative music.
