Some bands have a lot to answer for, don’t they? Without
The Velvet Underground would we have
The Strokes? Without
Television would we have
Razorlight? Without
Shed Seven would we have the Teletubbies? Tonight’s Death Disco serves up
The Dash, a band who would quite simply not exist, had it not been for CBGB’s in the mid-seventies. So we get
The New York Dolls,
The Ramones etc. Fronted by Johnny Borrell look-a-like Marc Hayward (
doesn’t he work for...), the band has an immediately satisfying energy. The majority of the songs fall on the punkier side of pop, but there are spatterings of melody that lift their tunes out of the boring dirge bucket and into the gut-busting arena that this music must inhabit to truly succeed.
With a brand new bass player drafted in for this gig, the rhythm section is tight but suitably unhinged. Unfortunately, the keys don’t seem to add anything to the performance, and at this early stage seem out of place. Hayward’s Telecaster is serated with an intensity befitting songs of this abandon, but stand out numbers are few and far between. However, at the princely age of six months, The Dash still have the time and potential to batter their sound into a few three-minute gems, causing what is already a decent new band to rise through the phlegm-drenched ranks.
The Dash
Quick question - "doesnt he work for..." who? looks like he works for the KFC across from DDisco to me and was fighting on stage to not go back! For fuck sake dont send him back!
PS, lazy reviewer syndrome - i never saw or heard any Ramones on stage,The only real New York Dolls reference was the amount of sweat, they tried so hard only an unfit 50 year old could produce that much!
But come on, you only mentioned Ramones and NYDolls because thats what the scene dictates. There was the rhythms of the police there, the energy of the pistols, and the model looks of ...um...models - Keys may have been drowned out but damn did i see that twinkle in his eye!
Much more here than meets the eye, or indeed ear, and surely will get better too! Exciting times we live in, i think these guys could make it a whole load better. X
Re: The Dash
In the review I state that the songs do not fall into the "boring dirge bucket". They are "lifted" out of it because of decent melodies etc.
I believe a certain member of the band does/has worked for a weekly music publication - I have checked my facts - although apologies to the guy if this is no longer the case. Perhaps I could have been clearer here.
I own records by NYD's and The Ramones - parts of the set did remind me of these two bands - we shall have to disagree.
"Much more here than meets the eye, or indeed ear, and surely will get better too! Exciting times we live in, i think these guys could make it a whole load better." X
As I said in my last sentence "...The Dash still have the time and potential to batter their sound into a few three-minute gems, causing what is already a decent new band to rise through the phlegm-drenched ranks.

Re: The Dash
I know you were not getting at the dash by the dirge bucket comment, i just thought i would have a bit of a dig at the "scene", it pisses me off intensly for most part.
Weekly music publication eh? Oh The shrouds of mystery.
Just gonna have to disagree about the ramones and new york dolls thing im afraid but fair enough if you will stand up to the might me about your opinion, it is about opinion after all. Still, its what you get from it on the night. not being familiar with thier(the dash's) stuff, i can only say what came to me at the time.
Finally,to cap it, the "Much more..." bit is just advice to other readers, i had a fucking hoot, it was a great night and i loved the band, you dont see pop like that on those types of stages that often.
When are they playing next?
There, now i can live the rest of today guilt free. X
Thankyou Mr Ross.

Re: The Dash
Well, there aren't many of them, are there?
The Dash
Other than that I thought a very positive and accurate review and I'm looking forward to the Barfly on 7th Aug!! Thanks.
The Dash
Also the opening track was really in-your-face and i can see exactly why - as I later found out from the drummer, Ben - it is Gordon Raphael's favourite... and he's produced it for their demo. Then there's the single which kept the whole audience moving....
So really 'stand out tracks' are not an issue.... just a fucking stand out gig i thought....c x
