Very small but cosy london venue which sits literally upstairs above the main Garage in Higbury. It looks like someone's attic with the walls painted black, a teeny stage and a bar installed. They have quite good club nights certain Fridays and Saturdays of the month.

Billy Mahonie, Supercoolwater at London Upstairs at the Garage, Fri 22 Sep

Review by Matthew Willson

A small crowd packs into the relaxed and intimate venue above the garage to watch Billy Mahonie prove the sheer idiocy of their ex label bosses in dumping them earilier this year. Support came in the form of elementary 3-piece post-rock noise, with melancholy vocals to match. The inexplicably-named Supercoolwat»

Drugstore at London Upstairs at the Garage, Sun 17 Dec

Review by Susi O'Neill

Sitting down, it’s definitely the new standing up when it comes to gigs; acoustic gigs that is. And we all know that acoustic gigs are a tough call, for every Dylan there’s a million Travis’s with an insipid blend of uninspiring whiny three-chord-sittin-ona-stool excuses for a long stint at the bar. Drugstore fans i»

Mountain Men Anonymous, Frankie Machine, The Warm Jets at Upstairs at the Garage, Islington, Fri 04 May

Review by Sara E

Once I learnt Frankie Machine were playing Upstairs @ The Garage as part of the Silver Rocket club, I HAD to be there in order to lose my live virginity to the machine. And with The Warm Jet's first live appearance since the Reading Festival 1998 and the much acclaimed Mountain Men Anonymous, you »

Miss Black America at London Upstairs at the Garage, Sat 19 May

Review by Gen Williams

I don't normally write reviews from a first-person point of view. I generally take the conventional, tried-and-tested journalistic thang of writing as a beady-eyed, objective observer. But just for once, fuck that; Miss Black America give the kind of performance that defies objectivity and sends it soaring disgr»

Lightyear, Save Ferris, Jesse James at London Upstairs at the Garage, Sat 08 Sep

Review by Mat Hocking

There is a real air of excitement in The Garage tonight as all the flappy-shorts & rucksack-wearing skanksters begin to fill it to capacity in anticipation to the ska-punk heroes that’ve brightened up their world since the first horn parps of ‘The World is New’ first burst out of their speakers on their debut CD back i»

Reynolds, Part Chimp, Fixit Kid at London Upstairs at the Garage, Fri 04 Jan

Review by Garlon

I have never been to a gig before where the entire crowd put their fingers in their ears at exactly the same time. Tonight was an exception. Fixit Kid started off the night with a hell of a racket reminiscent of early Big Black with the addition of vocal screams that couldn’t be deciphered but worked a treat. At»

Fad Gadget at London Upstairs at the Garage, Fri 18 Jan

Review by Emma Smith

Depending on who you are, Fad Gadget is either a one-man music legend, or an odd man with a silly name. align="right"> Being firmly entrenched in the former category however, I looked forward to this gig with a degree of excitement verging on the abnormal, owing to »

Part Chimp, Torqamada at London Upstairs at the Garage, Fri 02 Aug

Review by Adie Nunn

Oo-er! The DJs are playing Judas Priest and AC/DC. The venue is practically empty but Torqamada don't give a fuck about that slight setback. The four 18-year-old Glaswegians are dressed for the part. One of the singers even has a headband. They look like they've stepped out of some '80s metal gi»

Ciccone, Your Highness at London Upstairs at the Garage, Thu 19 Sep

Review by Andy (quirk) Thomas

It's a quiet Thursday night in Highbury. Very quiet in fact, there are less than thirty people milling around the punk rock scout hut that is Upstairs @The Garage when Your Highness take to the stage. The silence is shattered very abruptly. Your Highness are one of Organ's favourite bands an»

Fionn Regan

My Morning Jacket, Fionn Regan at London Upstairs at the Garage, Mon 03 Feb

Review by Andrew O'Donnell

Fionn Reagan turns up on stage late but looking assured and confident. The set goes quickly; lots of bass in the guitar and the melancholic intricacy of the songs benefits from it. All of his recent 'Reservoir EP' is played, the strummiest parts blasted out under his undeniably catchy f»

Johnny Truant, Eden Maine, Emotive Exposed at Upstairs at the Garage, Islington, Sun 06 Jul

Review by Mike Diver

I’ve seen bands get first-night nerves before, but at their first ever London show Wolverhampton’s Emotive Exposed show no signs of trepidation, acting instead like seasoned pros. Their mix of Dillinger Escape Plan style jazz-metal (or something) and frenetic metalcore makes for an exhilarating surprise, and »

Milburn at London Upstairs at the Garage, Mon 04 Jul

Review by Julian Ridgway

There’s a hoary old cliché when describing bands to say that they play every song/note like it’s the last one they’ll ever play. Milburn, and especially singer Joe Carnall, come much closer to playing every song like it’s their first – enthusiastic, determined and wide-eyed.»

This Aint Vegas at London Upstairs at the Garage, Fri 02 Sep

Review by Mike Diver

Sunderland-based This Aint Vegas have returned to recording ways with a devilishly good second album, The Night Don Benito Saved My Life, and have rolled into town for the first of two capital shows to prove just how potent the new songs are...»

BSM Pre-Summer Party at London Upstairs at the Garage, Mon 29 May

Review by Mike Diver

These are the rolling rocks of rock and roll, gathering no moss as they plough onwards, up hill and down dale, always on a quest to educate through intelligence, not standard-issue bluster and bombast. Still, you’d best duck and cover all the same.»
