This is a student venue and thus full of students. The plus side is that the bar is not over-priced. Alas, the beer is provided in flimsy plastic cups.

A fair amount of bands play here. The sound is a bit hit'n'miss.

Review by Vic Bird

This year it wasn’t just foot and mouth killing the herds of this country… Britain saw another epidemic, and one of apathy, boredom, lacklustre motives and despair. It is this my friend that has been killing the youthful sheep of today. In the words of Belgium Pop misters Soulwax “Something’s gotta give” »

Crackout, The Pattern, Vex Red at London ULU, Thu 01 Nov

Review by Pam Leader

Tonight, London's ULU is graced with three British bands all set to make a dent in the music world. First up, The Pattern. Sounding like a dodgy 60's style, NME lovin' indie band, they do have potential in their Iggy-like stature, but fail to bring originality to the forefront. Knowing the aforementioned music »

madcapsules

(Review of nothing)

Review by Emma Smith

I knew something pretty special was going to happen, on entering the ULU and realising The Mad Capsule Markets would be plying their trade here tonight. ‘Futuristic-digi-hardcore-punk-metal’ is how the sound of their new album, ‘Osc-Dis (Oscillator In Distortion)»

Reading 03 - Hope Of The States (by Ollie A)

Hope of the States at London ULU, Fri 10 Oct

Review by Gareth Dobson

"It might not be quite as good as it always wants to, or really should be, but there is a sense of self-worth and magnitude that exudes from these men of furrowed brow that is single-handedly driving them onto bigger stages with bigger crowds who are increasingly more believing."»

Carina Round, Mew at London ULU, Tue 02 Dec

Review by Gen Williams

Lather, rinse, repeat as required. That seems to be Mew's motto. Having blitzed the UK earlier this year to promote their album, they're back again to plug the Xmas single that they released this time last year. Well, if it ain't broke...»

65daysofstatic at London ULU, Tue 07 Mar

Review by Fiona McLaren

135 years ago Friedrich Nietzsche described the perfect tragedy, the highest form of art, as the convergence of two diametrically opposed forces in a ‘marvelous metaphysical act’. These two forces were the Gods; Apollo of music, drunkenness and instinct meeting in a marital bliss with Dionysus, the God of visual arts, reason and rationality. Nietzsche offered Wagner as the epitome of his theories, but I think tonight, I’ve found a better example.»

TV On The Radio, Celebration at London ULU, Mon 15 May

Review by Gen Williams

What should the uninitiated expect from a TV On The Radio set? Your scribe, untouched by the TVOTR live experience, arrived with mixed expectations: a fevered party-time celebration? A self-consciously clever patchwork of sounds? The biggest surprise, given their intensely well-regarded stock of material and general reputation for being one of the best and most forward-thinking bands around, is how laid-back tonight's packed ULU excursion is.»

Subtle, Culprit One at London ULU, Sat 18 Nov

Subtle's Adam ‘Doseone’ Drucker is man full of jokes. So much so that he is determined to have a jolly good chuckle in the perfidious face of life. Surrounded on stage by an array of theatrical skulls and a torso-masked mascot, it almost sets looks like a scene from a twisted take on Hamlet...»

Future Of The Left

Future Of The Left at ULU, Camden Town, Tue 26 May

Review by Sean Thomas

For a band known for their acerbic wit, it’s surprising that it takes four songs for Future Of The Left's Falco or Kelson to utter a word to the crowd. Indeed the highly eclectic audience might possibly feel a little short changed were it not for the aural onslaught they'd just been on the receiving end of. »
