Scratchie was founded in 1995 by Jeremy Freeman, Adam Schlesinger from Fountains of Wayne/Ivy, Kerry Brown from Catherine, and Smashing Pumpkins people James Iha and D'Arcy Wretzky.
Initially they were based in Chicago had distribution through Mercury Records, but a year of legal wrangling ended the pact after Universal merged with Mercury's parent company, Polygram. They then signed a deal with Alternative Distribution Alliance (ADA) and moved to New York.
