Liars, Wild Beasts, of Montreal, Sky Larkin, Blood Red Shoes, & more pick their favourite artwork

In Depth by James Lawrenson

As part of artwork day we got some of DiS' favourites to contribute some words on their favourite record sleeves. Keeps 'em out of trouble, doesn't it? They were only too happy to help, their selections are below, and run the gamut from psychedelia to soul to performance art. Going by the age of the records, it either says something about the death of good artwork by the rise of 50 pixel squares on an iPod screen, or something about album artwork having less of an impact on our psyches once we're no longer in our formative years. There's nothing more important than the posters that grace the walls of our teenage bedrooms. Either way, below are the choices of bands including Liars, Slow Club, of Montreal and Wild Beasts. Indietracks 2010: The DiS review

In Depth by Dom Gourlay

Last weekend (23-25 July) saw the fourth Indietracks Festival. Held at the Midland Railway site in Butterley, Derbyshire, its steadily growing reputation as one of the UK's most chilled out and amiable festivals saw a record number of punters make the journey up the A38 and back. »

Slow Club, Summer Camp, Veronica Falls @ KOKO 1/6/2010

In Depth by Luke Slater

Owing to an earlier unplanned desperate fix of a washing machine, Spectrals are the victims. Which is a shame but, given the presence of other bands on the rest of the bill, is far from unrecoverable. The first of those support bands to shower me in melod»

This Week's Singles: 24/05/10

In Depth by Wendy Roby

This week: a plea for more nice things [NO REALLY], whether it is worth being the sixth man on the moon and a mahoosive dose of Good Ache. Also: Giving Up On Going Out With People, But Not Getting All Boo-Hoo About It. Some good advice there. »

Favourite Five from: Late of the Pier, Slow Club, Ruby Suns, PABH

In Depth by Sean Adams

In this set of musicians' favourite five albums of 2009 we have folky-popsters Slow Club, dreamy-fuzzy-lovely antipodeans The Ruby Sons and tear-your-face-off types Pulled Apart by Horses. Kicking things off however is a member of DiS' alt.-Mercury-Music-Prize, the Neptune prize winners Late of the Pier whose new single 'Blueberry' is out this week via Erol Alkan's Phantasy label»

This Week's Singles: 12/10/2009

In Depth by Wendy Roby

As a neat way to top and tail the Summer, this week I am back at the coastal caravan with my unfaithful old internot. This means three things; one, that I cannot check facts and therefore have to take the press releases at face value (which I am sure the music PRs will adore), two, that I cannot watch the videothings and make judgements upon which are fearfully offensive and which are not (this also means – woo! - the music must speak for itself, man), and three, that I Spy a cast-iron opportunity for making up some stuff that I can pretend I read but sadly cannot check for truthiness because ohdearmemydongleisbroken. Do see if you can spot the lies, damn lies and fiddled statistics, in the following reviews. »

This Week's Singles: 28/09/2009

In Depth by Wendy Roby

Everyone – and I mean everyone is releasing a single this week. So many, that I wanted to use a thoroughly unfair culling method that involved a blindfold, a pointy stick and some glue - or worse, inadvertently lose half my pile down the back of the bin (whoopstheregomyfingers, can't listen to them now, ohdear). Luckily, someone appealed to my better instincts and I did what I am paid to do. Which was to listen to the darned things; ALL FORTY THREE OF THEM. »

V Festival 2009: The DiS Review

In Depth by Dom Gourlay

V Festival - or the Virgin Media Festival to give it its correct title - may be the least favoured of its kind as far as music connoisseurs are concerned. A quick flick through the line-up doesn't exactly set pulses racing, as bland non-entities like The Script and Paolo Nutini rub shoulders with has-beens whose sell-by date expired over a decade ago (Ocean Colour Scene, Happy Mondays). However, cast all snobbery to one side for two days and delve a little deeper into the mixing pot and there are actually several gems to be found along with moments of real inspiration here. »

Slow Club's Top 10 Angsty Anthems

In Depth by Luke Slater

We all love a bit of angst now and then. Some more than others. Sheffield two-piece pop-folkers certainly do and to celebrate (or commiserate...) this fact, they compiled their Top 10 anthems of angst, or Top 10 Angsty Anthems as we are calling this feature...»

Iceland Airwaves - Reykjavik

Iceland Airwaves 2007: the DiS review

In Depth by Shain Shapiro and Rob Webb

Reykjavik is odd. It sits on top of the world in many respects: geography for one thing, as well as fashion, art and music. On the other hand, this town is bonkers. DiS's Rob Webb, Shain Shapiro and Gary Wolstenholme brave the cold, and booze prices, for the annual Airwaves festival»

Iceland Airwaves 2007: check out the DiS blog

In Depth by Mike Diver

Britain - London, anyway - might be enjoying some autumnal sunshine right now, but spare a thought for DiS’s Rob Webb, Gary Wolstenholme and Shain Shapiro as they board a plane for the dark and icy surroundings of Reykjavik for the annual Iceland Airwaves festival. Think of them, huddled, freezing… And read our blog...»

Latitude Festival 2007: the DiS review

In Depth by A bunch of drunk DiS writers

Latitude has swiftly become a deep-rooted fixture on an ever expanding festival circuit, offering weary Glastonbury revellers an opportunity to recharge under the Suffolk sun and various meeejia folks the chance to check out a series of fine 'adult-orientated' headliners. DiS dispatched a handful of critical sorts to Henham Park, in Southwold, and asked them to select their personal standouts and new DiScoveries...»
