Two of the most eagerly anticipated tours in the early part of 2013 undoubtedly center around the return to UK stages of Sigur Ros and My Bloody Valentine. In the second of Dom Gourlay's regular series of Gourlay Files reports from the UK's best gigs, and some of the world's finest festivals, DiS handed Dom the unenviable task of comparing the two in a head-for-head battle before deciding which one came out on top. With all this talk of the UK music industry said to be in decline, one wonders what opportunities are available for bands and labels to break through in the foreseeable future. However, one independent label that has continued to thrive against such adversity is London-based imprint Rocket Girl. »

Whilst XL, Domino, 4AD, Wichita and others put new acts on the map and control the direction and priorities of the new alternative scene, the major labels look distracted and erratic in their signing policy and approach to new acts. Many of the staff realise the game has changed but no one across the big three is really looking as though they know the rules by which to play. For now, to allow the scenes to flourish and to protect itself from further unwise and costly bad investments the sensible major label should focus on catalogue and known artists. It isn’t a panacea but its a way forward for a group of companies that look to be in serious need of new strategies. »
