Michelle Branch signed a contract with Maverick Records at the tender age of 17. Lazy comparisons to Alanis Morrisette abounded, although the truth was that she mined a more tender, singer/songwriter-orientated vein. Her good, but overproduced, debut album The Spirit Room was released in 2001.
