Reading 2009: Day Two roundup
Day two of Reading begins with that smudged, slightly hungover feeling. Everyone seems quite happy, despite the hiding sun and the wind which has died down a little from last night's cut-through-you brrr-ness.»

So, in no particular order, here are the twenty acts DiS' editor is most looking forward to seeing this weekend. »
I love it when this happens. For this week is a genuinely mixed-up, schizophrenic bag of sevens that has something to recommend almost every genre you can think of. In the end I am plumping for the ambition and modernity of the caffeinated, fuck-up funk of Debruit, because he is new. But quite honestly there are at least three standout winners here.»
Based on a range of factors, from board discussions, reviews so far this year and utterly subjective personal opinion, DiS' editor has compiled the twenty best independent albums of the first half of 2009 to coincide with Independent's Day.»
We're guessing if you're reading this from the comfort of your sofa, maybe with your feet up, BBC 6Music pumping in the background and Wimbledon flickering in the corner of your eye. You probably spent this morning pulling a smug grin whilst looking at photos of the puddles and mud in Somerset. Here's our guide of how best to digest Glastonbury from the comfort of your living room this weekend.»
We recently had Metric Week on DiS because we love them so much. They're also due to play our Great Escape stage tonight, so ahead of that show Emily, Jimmy and Josh have compiled a mixtape each. »
Oh Brighton, with your annual clusterf*ck of bands 'n' booze, you really are spoiling us.»
Metric have lived and spent a lot of time in some of the hippest cities in the world, in fact, they're one of the most city-shifting, transient bands we've ever met. Each day this week they're going to share their favourite things about each city they've lived in or visited. For the final instalment of this series we have Joules', guide to Oakland, California.»

We kick things off with the band's bassist Joshua Winstead telling us all about the big apple... »
To kick off our special Metric takeover week, Emily Haines, songwriter, singer, renown synth-basher and superhero, walks and talks us through their forthcoming album Fantasies. »
It's October first... Happy Birthday to us! And now for an indulgent dose of nostalgia as DiS' founder looks back at previous incarnations of the site»
Possibly, you are aware of Drowned In Sound Recordings; given that it’s the sister operation of this beloved website you read, adore and occasionally spam. Gareth Dobson checks in with founder Sean Adams to begin DiS' regular label features.»
2006 has been a year that’s lived up to and exceeded all expectations. With enough fantastic albums to treble the length of my Albums of the Year list, and a gig list long enough to frighten even the hardiest tour manager, I’ve seen plenty of goodness this year. Luckily we’re on hand to jog those memories and help you reminisce about the good times and the couple of sad moments which brought us all back down to Earth with a big bump. This is 2006...»
So Muse have only gone and sold out Wembley Stadium, before the thing's even open! Now they've added a second show for June 2007. Shitting crikey! Congratulations... now, can we suggest some support acts...»
This week, DiS is going to Iceland! No! Not to the frozen food haven for some over-sized breasts a la Kerry Katona (formerly of hit UK girl group Atomic Kitten), but to the frozen LAND haven quite a lot further north than Scotland for the quite fantastic Iceland Airwaves Festival that runs in Reykjavik from Wednesday to Sunday. See? We do leave the M25! We’re going on a plane so that things like grass and trees do not confuse us.»
Everyone who knows anything about something about music waits in anxious expectation for the August Bank Holiday weekend. That is when The Carling Weekend descends upon two places in England with loads of bands that are okay and some bands that are bloody wicked and others that are fucking shit. Apparently we’re not allowed to call it Reading Rock anymore 'cause that went out in the 1980s. Whatever. Here are the ten bands that we reckon you should see.»
This week’s Tuesday DiScussion? the indie club mix-tape DiScussion. Many a DiSser can be found week in, week out, playing records (okay, CDs mainly) to assembled punters at clubs both within the M25 and beyond it. There’s more to come, too – watch this space. For today, though, we’re thinking along High Fidelity lines… what’s YOUR ideal indie club top ten... »
Who would have thought that DiS would descend upon Brighton's music industry showcase extravaganza in such fashion. Without a soul in sight waiting to 'network' with a single one of our merry shambles of a crew, we set to work on actually seeing bands. Despite the cruel, bitter wind that insisted on hurtling toward us with near-freezing drizzle as its freight, we actually saw some bands. My word, we saw some rather spectacular bands at that...»
DiS is taking a veritable troupe of badness down to Brighton in just a few days to frolic in the surf and eat whelks and other minging seafood. The task in hand is to see at least three bands at the Great Escape – part of the Brighton Festival Month. Handily, you will find The Drowned In Sound Top SIX Bands To Go Rock Out To just below to help YOU see more than three bands over the three-day festival. How amazing?? Yes, quite. Additionally, there are all also all the details you’ll ever need to check out all your favourite Drowned in Sound Recordings bands.»
Before we ironically don a Stetson and fill our tattered suitcases with Alka Seltzer, Berocca and Drowned in Sound Recordings label samplers; here's a guide to some DiS highlighted acts that we think you should take a moment check out, regardless if you're going or not. Please post your own suggestions and recommendations as comments below. And if you're throwing any parties please drop us an email with invites as our media accreditation was turned down and we dont wanna miss out. »
You heard it here first... DiS does singles club in the digital age. 45 digital singles a year (available from all good download stores) and to launch annual subscription later this year.»
