Fourche à Foin: DiS en Pitchfork Music Festival, Paris

In Depth by Sean Adams

Walking into Grande Halle de la Villette - past a gigantic neon Pitchfork Music Festival sign which over-looks a courtyard with a big impressive fountain - first impressions are over-awing. Pitchfork haven’t got some tiny theatre turned into a music venue but a huge enormo-barn, purpose-built for music... or possibly for housing a family of blue whales. As the lights dim, what looks like 5,000 people are gazing at the stage...»

This Week's Singles: 16/05/11 Lykke Li, Ghostpoet, Justice, Those Dancing Days

In Depth by Wendy Roby

Although it is parlous to make comparisons between olden day sounds and modern nonsense, this week I have struggled. This is partly due to my having moved The Elizabethan (my favourite, favourite record player) into my bedroom; and it is partly because once moved, I started playing things like Hall & Oates, The Peddlers and Sunflower by the Beach Boys on it. And while I listened I had a nice cup of coffee from the Teasmade. Faced with such fulsome early morning bliss, not much can compete. But Ghostpoet had a ruddy good try. It's alright though, I still love now. »

10 Years of Nordic: An Introduction

In Depth by Luke Slater

So, why run a week of Nordic music to look back over the past ten years? Well, aside from being a Nordic fetishist, this series gives us a chance to look at the diversity within a geographical area and in particular one which has been such a deep well of significant quality over the past decade – and one which is surely only going to get richer. This is worth celebrating.»

Spotify playlist: 10 Years of Solo Artists - Part 1: Pianos, Banjos, Drums + dropped Ds

In Depth by Sean Adams

Putting this playlist together I was reminded that the poignancy of many of these songs comes from that single-mindedness that only an individual with something to say or a deep well of emotion to share, is capable of. Love, hate and the precarious life vs. death battle looms large. For some of the artists on this playlist, life was too much and they didn't make it to 2010 but don't let that put you off because there's a human spirit in all of these songs (save for the few that are that little bit alien or divorced from any known reality). It's a spirit that will lift you on your best days and cradle you on your worst. »

101 Nordic: A Northern Lights-lit Playlist

In Depth by Sean Adams

Breezy strings, doom-drenched death-metal, synth-pop, submerged harmonies, summery ukeleles and icy xylophones are - as this playlist attests - just some of the sounds of the Nordic region, compiled as part of Nordic Day to celebrate DiS curating a Nordic night tonight in London info.»

Hove Festival 2009: DiS' highlights

In Depth by Rob Webb

Hove Festival took place on the idyllic island of Tromøy, near Arendal in Norway, last week. DiS was there, and soaked up a glorious four days of sun, sand and bands. If you've not been - and we're hazarding a guess that many of you haven't - then trust us when we say it's an altogether more civilised, sunny alternative to that English festival we've heard so much about these past few days. Here's DiS' highlights. »
