In Depth
SXSW high-fives from Rolo Tomassi, Fear & Records and Holy Roar Records
Rolo Tomassi went to Austin, Texas and absolutely slayed SXSW. They made noise, made people dance and made people cry. We gathered a gang to drive them across the desert and to score them beer and make sure that they ate enough BBQ. In return, they told us all about their five SXSW musical highlights...»
Slight return: DiS's tips for 2007 reprised
This time last year DiS was outlining its tips for the following twelve. Next week we’ll be doing similar – bringing to your attention the bands we think will matter in 2008 – but before we get stuck into the future, let’s dwell upon the past a little»
DiS's features of 2007
We’ve had our albums of the year and our tracks of the year, and here DiS bids you adieu for 2007 with our favourite features of the past twelve months, for your instant-click consumption and eye-aching reading pleasure. Starring Animal Collective (pictured), LCD Soundsystem, Battles, Panda Bear, M.I.A., Gallows, Beirut, Björk and more»
Gallows: the Shape of Punk in 2007
This year Gallows have seen crowds swell from 50 to 5,000, their debut album picked up by a major, and have endured the slog of the US Warped Tour. In London again, DiS asks about a hectic 2007»
Label Focus #9: Holy Roar Records
Holy Roar are one of a few small domestic labels likely to outgrow their roots before long, with an admirably diverse and critically acclaimed back catalogue already theirs to call their own. DiS's Gareth Dobson plays the Q&A game with co-founders Alex and Ellen ahead of this weekend's Holy Roar vs DiS gig at London's Notting Hill Arts Club...»
The Weekly DiScussion: our alternative Mercury list...
So the Mercury nominations for this year aren’t so bad, a couple of proper WTF examples aside (The View? Really? Come on…). However good this year’s nominations generally are, though, we at DiS got the old grey matter burning away to compile an alternative list of twelve that could have made the cut...»
DiS's Download Diary: "sweaty and fat teenagers bearing token slogans..."
DiS didn’t make it to Download this year. Sorry about that. But one of our mates, Marc Bird, did – when he’s not running pretty-good-actually indie label Signature Tune (website), he’s running around the place looking for the best pop-punk parties this side of a Fat Wreck office blow-out...»
Dot To Dot: the DiS Reviews
Dot To Dot has happened. Been, gone, ain’t coming back for 12 or so flips of your tits ‘n’ ass Max Power calendar. Missed it? Too bad. We didn’t, and here is what we’re calling Some Words To Prove It. Or: Dot To Dot: the DiS Review...»
DiS @ The Great Escape, part one: Thursday
We left it a week – it needed space to breathe. Even now, every time I read this back I feel like a shoddy, poisoned mess of a human being. It seems like a good time when you’re sober, doesn’t it...»
Dot To Dot Festival: DiS's preview of Nottingham's biggest music marathon of the year
This Sunday, May 27, Nottingham plays host to the biggest Dot To Dot Festival yet - this year it's even got a sister festival, in Bristol. DiS's Dom Gourlay casts a critical ear over the Nottingham bill to pick a few choice acts from the slew of excellent bands performing across a variety of city centre venues... your legs are gonna be wrecked by the end of this Dot To Dot, that we promise...»
DiS @ SXSW: the review
DiS went to South By Southwest t’other week. Perhaps you saw our amazing preview content? Touch wood. While there we did some stuff – you know, stuff – but between sessions of stuff doing we saw some bands. Some good. Some great. Some neither. Some best left unmentioned. You won’t read about them here...»
DiS @ SXSW: the virgin's account
The South By Southwest virgin is a terrified creature. All around them, gaggles swarm, heads twisting and turning and hollering at other gangs. Noises creep and crawl from open bar windows; drums are smashed on a balcony and the chatter of industry insiders becomes an overpowering drone. The weak would bolt on the first day...»
DiS podcast: SXSW special
Wow, just when we thought we had too much South By Southwest preview stuff up already, we’ve only gone and recorded a brand-new podcast for you. Smells of barbecue sauce, too...»
Panic! At The Disco vs Gallows
2006 was a year. It was last year. 2006 was a year that punk rock burst all over front covers and end-of-year lists again in its many different guises. One new punk outfit trampled over the underground throughout the year on their way to megastar status, while another group of newcomers burst out of the ether in the autumn to quickly conquer the underground. This is Panic! At The Disco vs Gallows. Fight!»
DiS's Tips for 2007, Part One
Here we are, then: each of us a year older, and each of us a little wiser as to what’s great about music, and what sucks. 2007 holds within its twelve months many a musical treat; here, DiS exposes just a handful of them, with more to follow in Part 2. Foals, Gallows, I Was A Cub Scout and Youthmovies are detailed here, alongside many weird and wonderful more...»
DiS's interviews of 2006: DiScoveries, heavy-hitters and silly Some Questions
2006: twelve whole months of DiS running about the country, up stairs and down basements, into hotel rooms and outside into pub gardens, chasing bands. It's what we do, so that you don't have to.»
A Review of 2006: DiS is what it's all about, yo
2006 has been a year that’s lived up to and exceeded all expectations. With enough fantastic albums to treble the length of my Albums of the Year list, and a gig list long enough to frighten even the hardiest tour manager, I’ve seen plenty of goodness this year. Luckily we’re on hand to jog those memories and help you reminisce about the good times and the couple of sad moments which brought us all back down to Earth with a big bump. This is 2006...»
Some Questions: Gallows
Gallows are a band of five very, very pleasant hardcore mentalists from the equally lovely Watford. Stuart Gili-Ross is a big chap and he plays bass for them, mainly with his fingers and he really does like the ladies. In fact, the whole band seems to love it! DiS only spoke to Stuart though. Remember that while his thoughts are representative of Gallows, they’re also not. He’s just one man!»
A Month In Records: September 2006
Did you dig September as much as we did? Really, we’ve not known a month like it this year: fantastic releases were flooding through our letterbox near-enough non-stop. From metal to folk, to thunderous post-rock and twisted electronica, many a base was covered and covered brilliantly. So this month’s A Month In Records has been one tough mother to compile...»
