Iceland Airwaves 2011 - The DiS review
There is just something about Iceland. In reality it is not one single thing but a combination of them, from the people, the weather, the city of Reykjavík and, above all, all of these distilled in a few days in the middle of October that make up the annual Airwaves festival. Although 2011's edition was marked by several performances of Björk's Biophilia at the resplendelty and long-awaited Harpa Music Hall, it's quite arguably not what Airwaves is about. That said, every festival is helped by a "marquee" performance or two and Sinead O'Connor made an appearance, too.»

Jamie Stewart's bottomless intensity becomes more thorny and difficult to understand with every addition to the Xiu Xiu oeuvre, but his work is always compelling, often to the point of being hypnotic. With temperatures diving to -19°C, constant snowfall and prohibitive alcohol prices, this wasn’t the most welcoming of settings for by:Larm 2010, Scandinavia’s premiere music showcase. Nevertheless, this was a small price to pay for a large injection of emerging local talent that took part in this exceptionally well-organised event held in the Norwegian capital. DiS froze along with the rest of the unaccustomed international delegates, dragged itself around the 28 scattered venues in difficult weather conditions in order separate the wheat from the chaff and bring you the five hottest tips from this year’s festival. »

Madness. This is what you’re in for here at Iceland Airwaves, which has become a yearly pilgrimage for many music enthusiasts, press and industry. Once you’ve been, the chances are that sooner or later you’ll be coming back. Late-night mash-ups, hip crowd, a cryptic language and most importantly an overdose of pretty damn good local and international bands. My recollections are scarce and a crushing hangover is imminent… »
