There is a lot of music in this round-up, partly because I haven't done one for a while, but mostly because there is a lot of great music around at the minute (IMHO, etc). This column is basically a round-up of the best of my inbox and social media feeds... »

Music news these days can be kind of impossible to keep up with. It seems to be this constant scream of information, unintelligible by the sheer speed that it shoots by at, often borderline unintelligible in the first place – “what was that thumping past like an Olympic air defence missile about the one out of The Vaccines' twitpics from his holiday in Marbella again?” - and that being the case, DiS recently took the move to step away from news lest we're all sucked into some gaping cyber abyss of rumours, get-there-first reporting and regurgitated press releases.
So instead, we'll be bringing you a digest of the important goings-on each month in neat mixtape form. This month - Frank Ocean issues a statement on his sexuality, Death Cab For Cutie's Ben Gibbard goes it alone, Animal Collective take to the radio, Lykke Li leads a Fleetwood Mac love-in and more...»

Given that a lion's share of music news is of the "Hear this new song by..." variety, we thought it best to catch up on the past month or so within the context of the tunes themselves. At best, I hope to serve up a healthy dose of the cream of the crop, while the worst you might endure is a tasty feast for your ears above some recent facts to complete a well-rounded stew of new tune nutrition. So, without further ado, behold! The first-ever music news mixtape.»

As you will have noticed, BBC 6Music has been earmarked for closure by that Strategic Review thing that came out a couple of months ago. Will she? Won't she? She is?! Why is she?! Yes, it's that time of year again where everyone gets pent up about the Mercury Prize before claiming that they don't really care much for it anyway. It's that time of year when everyone in the indiesphere leaps onto the high horse of telling everyone else what is wrong with this year's Mercury Prize shortlist, charges round the racetrack of rigorously protesting how uninterested they are by said list, leaps over the fence of stating the obvious about some of the nominees not being that famous, and then probably heads off for a good feed in the stables of pointing out that M People won it once. So let's do that.»
