Biography
Introduction
Asobi Seksu (colloquial Japanese for "casual sex", or more literally "playful sex") is an indie band based in New York City. Their music draws influence from the shoegazing genre, and similarly uses a textured and effects-heavy vocal and guitar sound. The band consists of Yuki Chikudate (vocals, keyboards) and James Hanna (guitar, vocals).
The band was originally known as Sportfuck. In 2001, they released their first self-titled EP. Shortly after the release of the EP, the band changed their name to Asobi Seksu. Their full length debut followed in 2004. The band regrouped with a new rhythm section for their second album, Citrus, which was recorded in Gigantic Studios, New York City with producer Chris Zane. Released in 2006 by Friendly Fire.
One Little Indian Records re-released the band's first album Asobi Seksu and the follow-up Citrus in 2007.
Asobi Seksu was featured in the fifth episode of the fifth season of the American hit television show The L Word, and the first episode of the third season of the British television series Skins. The song "Layers" from the album Hush was also featured in an episode of Ugly Betty and in the trailer for So Yong Kim's film "Treeless Mountain"
In May, 2009, Yuki Chikudate released a single with Pocket called "Sampo." The track included remixes by remixes by Mux Mool, Blue Eyes and Craig Wedren.
