I love the idea of Detour, primarily because it puts the power back in the hands (and pockets) of music fans. It seems to me like the first time crowd-funding has made sense, and agree with Ian that it could just be the way all gigs will be booked in the distant future. I asked Ian a few questions about Detour...»
This column, this time: Words and thoughts on the grim situation here in Spain and two fantastic shows by Calexico and Andrew Bird that took place over two consecutive nights in the city’s beautiful Apolo venue.»
“Thanks y’all, good night,” are the words that somewhat distressingly fill the Barbican Hall on Monday evening as I fumble through the doors. Having missed a support slot from Minneapolis’s own looping extraordinaire and long-standing Andrew Bird »
“See a sea anemone, the enemy, see a sea anemone, and that’ll be the end of me.” So go the oblique opening lines to Andrew Bird’s ‘Anonanimal’. Cryptic, yes, but then nobody ever claimed him to be the most earnest songwriter in the world – n»
This week's Spotifriday playlist, featuring the works of Liars, !!!, NLF3, Ramadanman, Raime, Danny Saul, Andrew Bird and more!»
Another wonderful edition of this week's Spotifriday playlist featuring Bowie, Blake, No Age, Abe Vigoda, Dios, Max Richter, Andrew Bird...and, of course, a fair few more.»
Putting this playlist together I was reminded that the poignancy of many of these songs comes from that single-mindedness that only an individual with something to say or a deep well of emotion to share, is capable of. Love, hate and the precarious life vs. death battle looms large. For some of the artists on this playlist, life was too much and they didn't make it to 2010 but don't let that put you off because there's a human spirit in all of these songs (save for the few that are that little bit alien or divorced from any known reality). It's a spirit that will lift you on your best days and cradle you on your worst. »
Whilst our top 5 albums of the year list offers somes glimpse into what our staff have been listening to these past twelve months, the annual mixtapes give a real insight as to what has been pleasing the ears, minds and heart strings of those wot write for DiS. These 'mixtapes' or, er, DiStapes, are fairly self-explanatory, they have a-postcard-from-'09 intros followed by 9 songs, so intro blurbage ends abruptly... »

Andrew Bird released one of DiS' albums of 2007 in the shape of the wonderful Armchair Apocrypha. He's back with a new one, Noble Beast - his first for Bella Union - and we asked him to take us through the collection, track-by-track style.»

Aaaah thee long weekend: a chance to frolic in fields and set fire to paper cups or read the newspaper with a nice cuppa green tea. You may notice we’ll have our feet up too, so consider this blog-like list of stuff DiS Founder Sean Adams is digging, as something to tide you over ‘til we’re back on Tuesday.»
Every year is made up of twelve months. This, any modern Roman Calendar will tell you. What said flap of paper full of boxes and reminders to call mum and book a visit to the dentist will also tell you is that every month is made up of four or five Mondays. And some other days, too, but mainly Mondays. They’re all that matter, really, as it is on Mondays that our record stores are full to bursting with new releases...»
Yes, we realise this month’s A Month In Records is roughly a week late, but we’ve been suffering from something of an Our 66 hangover (click it for a link!). It’s okay, though: the painkillers have finally kicked in and, a few sour faces aside, we’re firing on all cylinders again.»
