I'm moving to Glasgow. GLASGOW DiSers
I'm gonna be studying a masters in Glasgow!
So please give me advice on places to search for housing (rent) or sharing - good places to live etc.
Thanks for any help !
I'm sure this won't be a remotely controversial opinion on DiS
But I've heard it's a shithole.
when are you moving up here? i'm flathunting at the moment
where are you going to be studying?
this could/probably will, have an impact on where you'd want to rent
course starts in September so maybe late August
not too sure yet
Super central then
South side is where most of my pals have moved but it's not walkable to the art school. I'd go for maryhill if I were you. Or if you can afford it the :West end:
You'll have no problem finding a decent fkatshare on gumtree
For about 350£ pm or less
the art school is easily walkable from the west end
which is the best, but can also be the most expensive place to live
there are cheaper areas - bits of partick/maryhill, thornwood too and loads of flatshares going
best places to look -

idk there are lots of students atm moving in around kinning park / govanhill and travelling in every day
personally i'm lazy as fuck and like to walk as much as possible so would try and get somewhere in garnethill if i was at the art school
weco, what's your budget?
all the flatshare sites are clogged up with undergrads subletting atm, it's annoying af
It's actually miles away though
and maybe a bit far out for someone just moving to the city. We lived right across from the art school in garnethill for a bit and it was pretty good. Charing Cross train station is well connected, got the underground at cowcaddens. I wouldn't want anyone to have to rely on first buses either btw.
Yeah thornwood is a good shout too
A few nice bars and restos down that end of db road.
fitzcarraldo this'd thisalso i wouldn't recommend someone moving to glasgow for the first time
moves to govanhill if they can afford not to as it's got some incredibly shit parts
Severed799 and japes this'd thisyeah it's an effort, think it's just an area where the rent's still reasonably cheap
if you go to art school you only have to leave the house to take an uber to the r&b night anyway 💅
I've noticed this on gumtree!
Lots of old adverts too!
smeegie
i'd say it is walkable personally
but I'm into walking, certainly cycling if not
sorry pal
we're all out in the sun just now, get back to us next week when it's shite again
I'm going to look at a place in Maryhill...
that area isn't too bad is it?
scaryhill? it's fine
tbh it varies quite a bit depending on exactly where.

ok cool
along the edge of Ruchill Park
hmm that's quite close to possil and you definitely don't want to be near there
saying that I stayed in the murano street halls in 1st year and it was alright. if I was you I'd be looking somewhere else though
justanothersheeldz this'd thisi'd second this
ruchill/that bit of maryhill isn't particularly nice
if you want an opinion on the area of places before you go and view them fire the street name in this thread and we can all tell you how shit/expensive it's going to be
thanks japes und fitz
The other place I'm looking at is in Dennistoun just down the road from the park... Craiglea Street...
Thanks for your help everyone - you really start understand the layout of the city more by asking.
fitzcarraldo this'd thisthat area seems good
nice twatty bakery round there. would recommend.
Yeah
wee bit dodge around there, although it is near the canal which is lovely/terrifying
aye that's definitely a nicer area
few nice cafes/restaurants around there and really close to the park too, i'd avoid pretty much all of the pubs on alexandra parade mind you
on the plus side it's pretty close to drygate which is fucking brilliant - http://drygate.com/
Severed799 and japes this'd thisI don't really know that area, but reckon that's a much better bet.
wza stays down that way iirc
I used to live in Dennistoun
it's great, fairly cheap, some nice bars and bakery/cafes popping up, walkable to and from town (although Bellgrove station is well connected) feels like a nice wee community and you've got Alexandra Parade just on the other side too.
Lo-Pan this'd thisi stay in maryhill
bit further up than ruchill, but i'm in a supposedly really dodgy housing estate and it's completely fine, never had any hassle (beyond the occasional bout of aggressive shouting in the distance, but never anything that's made me feel unsafe). generally i take the whole idea of dodgy areas with a bit of a pinch of salt - any serious criminal/gang stuff tends to only affect the people who are already involved in it, and getting mugged or whatever can happen literally anywhere (i always feel more nervous walking through the dead posh bits near my estate because they feel a lot more deserted and isolated with the houses set up back from the road and stuff. plus if you're gonna mug someone you'd have better pickings in a posh area, right)
there's not loads in maryhill but it's handy for the west end and city centre and next to really nice river and canal walks. plus cheap af
also there is a nice pub next to ruchill park
that used to be a scary place to avoid and now has a fancy conservatory and a thousand craft beers, so if that's anything to go by the march of gentrification is on its way anyway
^ definitely agree with this
your chances of being randomly attacked in a poor area are very low.
The People's Republic of Dennistoun.
Empirically yours,
Wza
PS: Don't let your judgement be clouded by the incendiary presence of "Scotland's first cereal cafe"* and/or the marching (delete as appropriate, depending on what provokes your ire more).

PPS: Do let your judgement be coloured by the following - Tapa, Tibo, the BBQ, Drygate, Redmonds, Coias, Celinos, Amore, McCune Smith, Drygate brewery, nearby WEST brewery, nearby St Luke's, Duke Street and Alexandra Parade having actual useful day-to-day shops and services, the Alexandra Park wildlife, Necropolis sexgoths, nearby Glasgow Green, Market gallery and nearby David Dale gallery, that video games place, nearby bfi cinemateque thingy, nearby women's library, the Carnegie library, the proximity of great sports facilities including a local pool/various gyms/running track on your doorstep and Commonwealth Games facilities like Velodrome/Emirates Arena/Tollcross Pool/Hockey Centre just round the corner, boss rail/bus/road/carpool/bikehire/walking into town in 20 mins transport options, the spaciousness and affordability of the tenement flats, the cross-cultural mix of the populace, the dubiously pathetic hardman cred to be milked from playing up to the fact you stay in the East End (,pal!), the actual low levels of crime compared to supposedly more desirable places like Byres Road, the sweet sweet wafts from the Tennents Wellpark brewery to the west and then the bakery to the East... Gil! Scott! Heron!
*In truth, a great ice cream parlour with a couple of shelves of boxes of cereal and a canny eye for PR.
You have some kind of Batsignal attached to mentions of Dennistoun
Don't you?
You don't post for months and then, BOOM! A soon-to-be Glasgow citizen needs advice and you're there.

Oh I think I went to that place the other day
After a Partick Thistle gamethe at Strathmore?
Busy, but doing fine. Hope the same's tru 4 U.
Heh. Didn't /quite/ manage to take a full six months off. Last thread I posted in was on Christmas Day, waiting for a plane to go on holiday. Didn't browse DiS when on hols and been too rushed at work to get back into it. Aside from a couple of snide checks, the first day I had a read through was the one when sean put the begging bowl out. Threw a few quid in the pot. That and the Patreon signup I set up just before halting posting means that DiS had been hella expensive for me recently on a pounds paid per word posted basis. :-D

that's the one
it's gone a bit too wanky west end really, think i prefer what used to be crosslands down the road (the trainspotting pub) which was rebranded with a truly woeful name/concept but seems now to have settled into just being a normal pub that is still affordable and not excessively posh (plus loadsa dogs)
an english friend of mine lived in yoker for a while
and for ages all her pals down south thought she was taking the piss and were convinced it wasn't a real place
really wanted to go there last time i was in glasgow
but didn't have time :(
tbf i've no business being in yoker
Severed799 this'd thisyeah
it's a considerable improvement on the pub before it, but doesn't feel very Maryhill either? Quite liked the wee terrace at the back though (as it was a sunny day)
Cycled through yoker on my way to Loch lomond
The other day. Seemed alright
so i've stayed in both Dennistoun and Maryhill, and while I loved staying in Dennistoun, none of my pals lived there and people fucking hated the idea of visiting... i think because although it's been gentrified a fair bit over the last few years, it's not a 'cool' bit of town. Probably pals with too many wendies too tbh. I'm glad I've settled down over Maryhill way - it's a bit shit, but it's closer to town/west end, there's better bars etc. close by in Kelvinbridge, and people will actually consider coming round to mine for a drink. Oh yeh, and the canal is great, especially if you have a bike.
They're both a similar price point, so I'd just weigh up what you're looking for. If proximity is your thing, I'd say Maryhill. If you want to pay less for living somewhere 'nice' but a little bit more out your way, go for Dennistoun.
I know one friend and a load of students from Yoker.
The friend says it's OK but he moved to Alloa.
The students all say it's stabby as fuck.
^
also apparently the phone signal in dennistoun is shit and no-one can ever get hold of you (second hand info/pro-maryhill propaganda)
Used to always see it as a destination of the front of buses
But couldn't tell you for a million pounds where abouts it was
why didn't you get on one?
once in a lifetime opportunity
Severed799 this'd this:-)
GLASGOW PEOPLE WHO can't conceive of anything of worth existing anywhere east of High Street. Except for a taxi ride to a Barrowland gig every few months.
Not you. Or even just them frit soft wendies you've mentioned. The whole city: a territorial mentality runs deep.
I think glasgow is teh new capital of DiS
fuck yr london
