Are we all agreed that there's absolutely nothing romantic about big, overly-planned church weddings?
Clearly i'm not getting married any time soon, too many buxom beauties on the go, innit, but i was watching a programme about weddings the other night and it dawned on me that in most cases, even bearing in mind that couples who let tv companies film their big day are hardly likely to be representative, there's absolutely nothing romantic about them.
Nowadays, what a man spends on a wedding (that's what happens now, innit, the bride's parents paying has kinda died out), or what a couple agree to spend on a wedding, is seen as a measure of their love, which to me seems a bit crass. Then there's the issue of wedding lists/gifts, again, for me, a bit vulgar, i'd rather people just came and enjoyed themselves.
Whenever i've been to a wedding, i've always got the distinct impression that the bride saw it has her day and not her and her husband's day, and that the guy's there as much for the knees-up and to get a bit of ear peace by giving her that big day.
I don't really understand why people need the security of a marriage certificate nowadys, and that is still a big thing, i reckon (perhaps it's different for civil partnerships still, idk). You can leave your estate to someone you're not married to, they can change their name if they like, you can have a service to recognise your love, buy them a ring if need be, not really sure why you need to spend, say, £30k for the actual bit of paper (in effect), or have the state/church give their seal of approval.
I'm not a complete grinch, like. If, when i'm much older and wordly (like...50s or something, maybe), i'm in a long-term relationship with someone i genuinely love, adore and trust, and she says it would really mean a lot to her if we were wed, sure, i'd do that, but it wouldn't be overplanned, have a cash figure attached to it, be in a big church or infront of hundreds of people, it'd be, say, me, her, both of our best mates, a crumbly church somewhere abroad, a nice meal, a few days away, AKA romantic.
This has ended up being much longer than i expected, but i'm sure we'll all agree on the general gist of it.
Cheers.
