Been followed home by a stray (?) cat...[Should I have done something]
Just got back from work and had to park the car down the street a bit. Got out and a cat came running up to me making some sort of meowing sound (sounded like a meow with a sore throat). It did the usual rubbing up against my legs, so I gave it a scratch behind the ears and went to walk up the road. It chased after me when I went to walk off, before disappearing beneath a car.
Started walking up the steps outside the house and it emerged from beneath the cars, still meowing, and ran up to the house and sat on the step as I went inside the porch. Opened the front door and it started scratching at the door and meowing (properly this time). I went and got a hobnob, broke a bit off and offered it to it, which it sniffed around before declining. Went and got it a bit of roast beef instead and it went down without touching the sides. Cat then tries to come in house. Sorry pal, but no.
Went and checked a few minutes later and it was still sat on the step. It's disappeared now (I think).
It had no collar and I couldn't feel a chip (assuming cats have them in the same sort of place as dogs), but it seemed in good nick and was very friendly as though it is looked after. The weird meowing it was doing made it sound quite distressed, but it might have just had a sore throat I suppose.
Should I have phoned the RSPCA or something? (It's not coming in the house, as lovely as it was, I'm allergic to cats and I wouldn't trust it not to destroy all the furniture) Or was it just trying his luck and acting the lost cat to get a bit of food?
