How offensive is the term Wop on a scale of Yank to Nigger?
Apologies if anyone is offended by me using any of these words, but I just want to know if it's OK to call my Italian friend a Wop or not and how offended he is likely to be.
-

(hot) italian girl at work called her dad a wop in earshot of
work people and got a caution because of it. i think it might be less offensive than gook. not sure though
-
a bit.
except slightly more racist.
alcxxk this'd this -
ive decided to adopt the catrace method
under certain condtions it seems to work
-
I probably wouldn't use it unless your Sean Connery in the Untouchables
an you're expressing dismay at the choice of weapon they have choosen to bring to a traditionally firearms based situation.

It's interesting do you think they would've do the same
if a black guy called a friend nigga?

breaking out of catraceter for a second

to be fair, some of the people here probably would have jumped on it as an opportunity
to racially slur a black man themselves

Wop?
Never heard that before.

Go back to where you came from!
-
Depends what it's an abbr of
Go for 'eye-tie', that's pretty neutral. Or wrongfoot him completely with 'gollywog'.
-
Oh look
This slur was used by Welsh Assembly Member Alun Cairns on a live broadcast from Radio Cymru on Friday 13 June 2008, when he referred to the Italian Euro 2008 football team as "greasy wops". As a consequence, he resigned from office.

radio cymru is all in welsh ( i think)
so that little soundbite slotted in to an incomprehensible sentence must've sounded amazing to a non welsh speaker
ma0sm this'd this -
Are you implying i'm a Yank?
I find that mildly offensive.
-
this is today. this goes on today. this went on before the 1950s.
how fucking naive and boring of you.
-
wop is pretty offensive, as is yank
if you put wop and yank together it sort of makes wanker, which isn't that bad
is flour evil when the outcome is bread? i rest my case.
-
no i didn't
fuck you.

after losing big pinochle pot, in prison, I used the term.
Funny story.
You know, now. Then, notsa much.
A partner *really* needs to learn how to pass aces...or somebody's gonna get hurt!
It's only politically-correct irony the poor player happened to be a former golden gloves boxer.
Let's say I strongly advise against it.
-
i wouldn't worry about it georgiabeth
he was born into a race, therefore is inherently racist.
-
I would be cautious
I think it is worse in America as Italians had a bit of history of getting grief when they emigrated. It is slightly worse than Kraut I'd say, but nowhere near N. Maybe on a par with Pikey.
-
i think it's worse than pikey
still looking for clarification on gook

actually I think the ambiguity might be enough to err on the side of caution
