You can link almost any Western pop culture phenomenon in the last 5 years or so to anxieties about Islam
Seriously. Well, not Islam per se, but the fears about fundamentalism penetrating the Western world, given it's pretty much a "no fun" zone even if you're a big fan of that kind of thing. The stupid things which have happened, though, are people choose to fight it in their heads with becoming an embarrassing example of Western culture - shallow, secular decadence with no allegiance to absolutely anything. The worst offenders? Probably the "LAD" bible, TOWIE/Jersey/Geordie Shore reality shows (if you like that kind of thing anyway, I don't judge), and dubstep.. an attempt to obsess over technology of the future to destroy people (i.e. said Islamists) who ostensibly are living in the past. Not too dissimilar to how shamelessly decadent the music of the early eighties was amidst anxieties about the Cold War. But unlike then, it was mildly interesting.
But my point is: why listen to these religiously bigoted morons? Why keep giving them so much coverage in the press and glamourise them as cartoon bogeymen? Most Muslims don't agree with what they think (though there's a fair argument that in the UK at least, Islam doesn't do enough to condemn them when they do something distasteful) so why are people fighting against a bit of sea spray believing it's a tsunami? It's like we've played World of Warcraft too much and we're all looking for demons we can fight in our own head dispoportionately..
